INDIANAPOLIS – Moloney Arena on the campus of Maryville University has been selected as the host venue of the 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments as announced by the league on Thursday.
The quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds of the 14th annual GLVC tournaments will be held at Moloney Arena on March 4-6.
“We are looking forward to hosting the final three rounds of the 2001 GLVC Basketball Tournament in St. Louis," said Jim Naumovich, commissioner of the GLVC. "The facility at Maryville will provide an outstanding venue for our event. This is a unique opportunity to play the quarterfinals, semifinals and final rounds of the women’s and men’s tourney at a neutral site, centrally located in the heart of the GLVC. We are grateful to Maryville for making Moloney Arena available to the league for our basketball championships and eager to showcase our teams in one of our newest GLVC communities.”
The tournaments will determine the GLVC Champion in both men’s and women’s basketball and the winners of the tournaments will receive the GLVC’s automatic berths to the NCAA Division II National Tournaments.
The 2011 tournaments will feature 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams and be played over two weekends. The top six men’s seeds and the top six women’s seeds will host first round contests on Saturday, Feb. 26. The top two remaining seeds remaining from first-round play on both the men’s and women’s sides will receive byes into the semifinals on Mar. 5. The remaining winners from Saturday will meet in quarterfinal games on Mar. 4 in St. Louis.
Moloney Arena will be the third venue to serve as a neutral site host for the GLVC Tournaments. TRAC on the campus of the University of Illinois-Springfield hosted last year’s event and Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Ind. hosted the event from 1999-2007. The GLVC tournaments were hosted on campus sites in 1998, 2008 and 2009.
Maryville will serve as a neutral site venue as the institution is not eligible to compete for the GLVC Championship until the 2011-12 academic year.
Bellarmine University captured the GLVC Men’s Basketball Championship and Drury University claimed the GLVC Women’s Title in 2010.
