COLUMBIA, Mo. - Quincy scored the match's only goal in the 61st minute - on a play when the Panthers lost two starters in a collision - and went on to hold off Drury for a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer victory here at Cosmo Park.
The contest was a makeup of a Sept. 10 match in Quincy that was postponed by heavy rains and lightning as the teams met halfway this time, in Columbia, to play the match.
Quincy improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC, while Drury also is 4-2 and 3-1 after having its four-match winning streak snapped.
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Hawks broke through when Grant Ellison scored off a pass from Jack Wedemeier at the 61:33 mark. On the play, DU junior All-America goal-keeper Stephen Conner came out of the box to try to thwart Ellison's open touch and instead collided with DU freshman defender Brendan Langford.
Conner suffered a broken nose in the exchange, while Langford suffered a possible leg fracture, according to DU coach Ryan Swan, who was at University Hospital in Columbia with both players late Tuesday night.
"When Quincy scored, Brandon's leg collided with Stephen's face," Swan said, adding that Conner might not miss any time in goal. He was replaced by sophomore Andrew Klumpff for the remainder of Tuesday's match.
"We still created some chances after that, but we didn't play particularly well in the first half," Swan said. "We had several chances in the second half and just couldn't capitalize."
Both teams were credited with 10 shots each in the match, five for each team in both halves.
