Southern Indiana picks up 2-0 non-conference win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
The University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team returned to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field and defeated West Virginia University Institute of Technology, 2-0, Tuesday evening. USI raised it record to 2-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 at home, while WV Tech goes 0-2-0.
The Screaming Eagles opened the scoring in the first half on a penalty kick by senior midfielder Michael Simcock, who converted the shot for his second goal of the season.  USI was awarded the penalty kick after freshman forward Kory Clawson was fouled in the box.
Senior forward Simon Rawnsley sealed the match for the Eagles with his second goal of the season. Rawnsley scored on a crossing pass from senior midfielder Chris Rutter to give the match a final score of 2-0.
Between the posts, USI freshman goalkeeper Jeffrey Niedlinger recorded his first collegiate win and shutout. Niedlinger faced nine shots and saved the only two shots on-goal.
The Eagles resume the GLVC schedule Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they start a two-game road swing at Saint Joseph’s College in Rennsselaer, Indiana. The road trip concludes Sunday at the University of Indianapolis when the Eagles and the Greyhounds play a 1:30 p.m. (CDT) contest.
