RENSSELAER, Ind. – Allie Reiners (Jr., Batesville, Ind./East Central) scored her sixth goal of the season on Wednesday night, but it was not enough for the Saint Joseph’s College women’s soccer team against McKendree University. SJC fell 5-2 in an offensive battle at Joseph L. Minielli Memorial Field.
The Bearcats (8-6) stuck first in the 10th minute on Chrissy Ghiradi’s free kick that flew over most of the Pumas’ (2-11) defense and to Erin Kilian. After a quick burst Kilian was able to score on the one-on-one situation with keeper Mackenzie Calvert (So., Borwnsburg, Ind./Brownsburg). In the 25th minute Carlee Luehman gave McKendree a 2-0 lead before SJC was able to score.
Stephanie Wiethop (Sr., Maryland Heights, Mo./Ursuline Academy) cut the deficit in half after converting on a free kick in the 36th minute. Wiethop fired the shot over the defensive wall and into the upper left corner as Bearcat keep Taylor Zerbe was unable to tip the shot offline.
Natalie Crane and Kilian each scored before the first half expired, giving McKendree a 4-1 lead at intermission. Amy Cassiday received a fortunate carom in the 53rd minute as her shot hit the cross bar, dropping straight down and behind the goal line.
The Pumas continue to operate their offense looking for chances to score. In the 64th minute Reiners finished-off Sarah Johnson (So., Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) lead pass to beat Zerbe to the right side of the posts. SJC was unable to add another tally, finishing the night with 22 shots including 15 coming on the Bearcats’ goal.
The Pumas will host Drury University on Friday evening at Joseph L. Minielli Memorial Field. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm CDT.
