SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Freshman Megan Bergerud scored 14 points to lead the Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball team Tuesday over Oakland City 74-63 in a nonconference battle, while four other also went into double figures for the Prairie Stars.
Four minutes into the game, UIS (6-16) took a one point lead on a freshman Mallory Beck lay-up and the Stars never looked back.
UIS would build a comfortable 15 point lead midway through the period, as it used a 13-2 run and then was able to take an 11 point advantage into the locker room. During the first period, the Prairie Stars scored 16 points off OCU turnovers and 16 in the paint.
The Prairie Stars quickly built another 15 point advantage in the second half, but OCU (11-11) would get it down to four with 3:34 to play.
UIS however would use a game ending 16-9 run to finish off the Lady Oaks. During the Stars run, they forced OCU into four turnovers and held the Lady Oaks to just one field goal in the final 1:42.
For the Stars, junior Bailey Beale and freshman Alyssa Palmer each scored 13 points, while senior Paulina Pogorzelski and junior Cristina Nevins added 10. Beck also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Prairie Stars will be back on the court Thursday when they travel to Quincy for a 5:15 p.m. tip-off. The game will be broadcast online.
