KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The No. 12 Greyhounds beat Wayne State for the third time this season to open their final day of action at the Rebel Spring Games, and closed their time in Florida with a 2-1, eight-inning win over No. 14 Augustana. UIndy improves to 15-6-1 on the season with the day's sweep.
Senior Jamie Keltz higlighted the day by becoming the UIndy career hits leader in the day's first at bat, while Krysta Bradford had a steller day at the plate with a 5-for-5, two run, two RBI performance to celebrate her birthday.
NO. 12 UINDY 9 - WAYNE STATE 4
The third meeting between Wayne State an UIndy opened on a high note, with Keltz becoming the program's career hits leader with a single up the middle.
The Greyhounds plated one in the second inning, with Cori Eckerle coming around after walking to start the inning. She scored on a single to right field by Krysta Bradford.
Wayne State answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Warriors added two more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 4-1.
Four runs in the top of the fifth put UIndy back on top, 5-4. Bradford opened the inning with a single through the left side, and was followed by an infield single from Kelsey Rummel. A single from Keltz scored Bradford, and a single from DeVyn Barker a batter later scored Rummel.
A throwing error past third base by the Warrior catcher scored Keltz. Jennifer DeMotte followed with a single up the middle, and she moved to second on a passed ball. A single from Lauren Edwards scored DeMotte for the fourth run of the inning.
UIndy plated two more in the sixth to run the score to 7-4. Both runs came around on a two-run single to shortstop by DeMotte.
An infield single to short by Keltz with one out in the seventh scored Che' Hanebrink, who walked to start the inning. Another single from DeMotte scored Keltz to run the score to 9-4 UIndy.
Edwards took the win for the Greyhounds, moving to 2-2 on the season. Keltz and DeMotte both finished 3-for-5 at the plate, with two and three RBIs, respectivly.
NO. 12 UINDY 2 - NO. 14 AUGUSTANA 1 (8 inn.)
The Greyhounds handed No. 14 Augustana its first lost of the season with a 2-1, eight inning victory Friday.
A Keltz walk to open the ballgame, followed by a basehit by Barker, an error on the Viking secondbaseman and another walk issued to Cori Eckerle combined to push one run across in the top of the first inning.
Neither team would score again until Augustana tied it up with a single run in the top of the sixth, on a pair of hits and a Greyhound error.
With the game tied heading into the bottom of the eighth, Eckerle was placed on second base. She was then sacrificed over to third by Edwards. Bradford then gave herself a birthday present with an infield single to first base, scoring Eckerle and giving UIndy the win.
DeMotte earned the win for the Greyhounds, improving to 9-3. The sophomore struck out six and walked just one in her complete game victory. Bradford was 3-for-4 at the plate in the win, closing out a 5-for-6 birthday for the Greyhound shortstop.
UIndy opens the home portion of its season Sunday and Monday, hosting GLVC foes Rockhurst and Drury. Both doubleheaders will be played at the Indiana Central Little League. First pitch Sunday is slated for noon, while Monday's action will begin at 2:00 p.m. from the ICLL.
