ST. LOUIS- The Maryville University softball team (6-16 overall) swept non-conference opponent, Southwest Baptist (2-10) Wednesday afternoon.
The Saints took the first game 8-0 in 6 innings as freshman Shelby Steinkamp (Lancaster, Calif.) hit a walk-off two-run homer. Her walkoff homerun was only the third in program history.
Maryville won the second meeting 6-3.
In the first game, the Saints took the 1-0 lead in the first as Steinkamp scored on a passed ball.
Maryville tallied five runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by freshman Jennifer Maynez (Clovis, Calif.).
Steinkamp's second career home run sealed the win for the Saints in the sixth.
Sophomore Julie Jouglard (Belleville, Ill.) pitched her third consecutive career game and sixth this season to earn the win in the circle.
The final game of the twinbill was scoreless until the third inning when Steinkamp drove in junior Molli Updegraff (St. Peters, Mo.) on her RBI single.
Maryville tallied five runs in the fifth, thanks to a leadoff roundtripper by Updegraff, the first homerun of her career, a two-run single by senior Amanda Buffa (Hazelwood, Mo.) and a two-run shot by junior Sarah Graham (Eureka, Mo.).
The Bearcats compiled a rally in the seventh as they scored two on K. Baderdeen's single. Southwest Baptist had runners on first and second with one out but the next batter, Brison hit into a double play to end the game.
Freshman Brittany Mayfield (Union, Mo.) picked up her first win in the circle as she pitched five innings and struck out two.
The Saints continue their homestand Saturday when they host No. 13 Indianapolis in a doubleheader at noon.
