ST. LOUIS- After a tenacious second-half comeback by Northern Kentucky in the second half, No. 5-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan held on through an overtime to take a 91-89 win and advance to a semi-final matchup with No. 1 Bellarmine Saturday.
Bobby Shannon hit a three from the top of the key with 1:27 left to play in regulation to put the Norse (20-8) up 76-73. A trey from Chris Williams with 23 seconds tied the game and sent it to extra minutes.
The Norse would lead by as many as six in the overtime, but an 8-1 run by KWC (19-8) down the stretch knotted the game at 89-89 with four seconds to play.
NKU brought the ball up the court and called a 30-second time out with two seconds on the clock. Coming out of the timeout, the Norse in-bounder couldn't find an open teammate and called another timeout, resulting in a technical foul due to NKU being out of timeouts.
Anthony Young stepped to the line for the Panthers and sank both free throws, giving KWC the 91-89 win and a trip to the GLVC semi-finals to face off with No. 1 Bellarmine.
Young led the Panthers with a GLVC Tournament record 36 points and seven boards. Cardell McFarland had 15 points and three assists in the ballgame.
For the Norse, Shannon led the offense with 23 points. Josh Tabb added 20 points and seven rebounds on the night.
KWC and Bellarmine tip at 2:30 Saturday afternoon from Maryville's Molony Arena in the second of the GLVC Tournament semifinal contests.
