Lewis wins 2011 GLVC Women's Basketball Championship with 71-68 victory over UIndy

ST. LOUIS- Lewis women's basketball took its first GLVC championship since 2007 with a 71-68 victory over No. 5-seed UIndy Sunday at Maryville's Maloney Arena. The Flyers, the tournament's No. 6 seed, clain the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament with the win.

The Flyers held a narrow lead for virtually the entire game, with the lead changing just two times over the 40 minutes of play. THe Greyhounds led briefly by a single point, 56-55, around the 6:30 mark in the second half, but could not hold on.

Aided by three missed three-point attempts and a turnover from UIndy in the final minute, the Flyers sealed the championship title with a pair of made free throws by Kady Currin, who joined Turpel on the GLVC All-Tournament team.

Lewis (15-15) secured the win behind 25 points from GLVC Tournament MVP Jenny Turpel. The Flyer senior also had five rebounds, while Same Rinehart and Lory Shaw each added 11 points for Lewis. Shaw also grabbed seven rebounds on the night.

UIndy (17-13) was led by GLVC All-Tournament team selection Heather Gonser, who had 17 points in the loss. Shelby Wall added 14 points for the Greyhound offense.

Joining Turpel, Currin and Gonser on the 2011 GLVC All-Tournament team were UIndy's Kristin Turner and Quincy's Courtney Shuman.

The 2011 NCAA Division II Tournament field will be announced at 9:30 EST live on NCAA.com. The GLVC had six teams in the top eight in the latest edition of the NCAA Midwest Regional rankings, released Mar. 2.
