ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis baseball split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with No. 14 Southern Indiana on Monday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers took the first game 5-4 thanks to two runs in the sixth inning of the seven inning contest. Lewis dropped the nightcap 6-3.
Lewis scored two in the bottom of the second in game one. Freshman Kyle Huber’s (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) double scored sophomore Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park). Huber then scored on a ground out by senior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport). Southern Indiana tied it up with two runs in the top of the third and then took a 3-2 lead with a lone run in the third.
Lewis trailed until the bottom of the fifth when a sacrifice fly by senior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) scored junior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage). Brauer had singled, stole second and then advanced to third on a single.
Senior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) started and earned a no-decision. He allowed three runs on seven hits through 5.2 innings. Newsome was removed for sophomore Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) with two outs and a runner on third in the sixth inning. Frahm came in and recorded a three pitch strikeout.
Lewis gave Frahm a chance at the victory by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) singled with runners on first and second and one out to break the tie. Brauer worked a bases loaded walk to make the score 6-4.
Frahm earned two quick outs in the top of the seventh before three consecutive Southern Indiana singles made it a 5-4 game and moved runners to first and third. Frahm however worked a fly ball to right field to end the game. Frahm picked up the win and moved his record to 2-0.
“Tyler was effective and I thought the bullpen did a good job in both games,” head coach Tim McDonough said.
Southern Indiana scored four runs in the first inning of game two. Lewis however got back in it with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Amesquita, Norwood and senior Vince Campagna (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) each had a run batted in during the frame.
Lewis’ best chance to tie it up and take the lead came in the fifth inning. Lewis had runners at the corners with no outs but was unable to tie the game. Southern Indiana scored two runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-3.
Senior Joey Gradney (Rantoul, Ill./Rantoul/Cleveland State) started for the Flyers and took the loss to drop his record to 2-4. He went six innings, allowing six runs (five earned).
“When you hit, play defense and get timely hits you’ll get a win like in game one,” McDonough said. “But when those are missing you see what happens in game two.”
Bolling failed to get on base in game two, halting his on-base streak at 24 games.
Southern Indiana is now 24-10 (16-4 GLVC). Lewis is 18-11 (11-7 GLVC). Lewis was scheduled to play a doubleheader at UW-Parkside on Tuesday. However those contests have been postponed following the wintery weather Wisconsin received Monday morning and the forecast for more inclement weather on Tuesday. Lewis’ next contests are now on Friday at Kentucky Wesleyan.
