CINCINNATI, Ohio - Senior Ben Newell closed out the 2011 GLVC Men's Tennis Tournament with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles and led the Rockhurst Hawks to their second league title in the last three season on Saturday afternoon with a 5-3 win over Southern Indiana. Rockhurst (20-3) rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the match with four straight singles wins.
Newell and his brother Zach prevented the Hawks from going down 3-0 after doubles action by defeating Diego Gimenez and Juan Quiroz at No. 1 doubles, 9-8.
Southern Indiana had surged to a 2-1 advantage after doubles behind wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 doubles. Following a win 6-1, 6-1 win by Joe Boesing at No. 3 singles, the Eagles held a 3-1 advantage.
Zach Newell began the Rockhurst rally with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ben Boesing at No. 4 singles and the Hawks tied the match at 3-3 following Pawel Grzegrzolka's 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
Southern Indiana's Rodrigo Flores retired in the third set at No. 5 singles and Ben Newell sealed the match with the singles win over Gimenez.
Rockhurst head coach Carolina Mayorga-Perry was named the GLVC Coach of the Year following the victory and the Hawks have earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
