CINCINNATI, Ohio - Drury won the school's fifth consecutive GLVC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday with a 5-1 dual match victory over Lewis. The Panthers (12-10) entered the event as the No. 2 seed from the West Division and claimed dual match victories over the top three teams from the East Division in two days.
Leading the way for Drury in the championship match were Abbey Sharpe and Ellend Bennett who each picked up a pair of wins.
Bennett teamed with Alana Bellinger to post Drury's first point of the day with an 8-1 victory over Kendra Mills and Clare Kessler at No. 3 doubles and closed the match with 6-4, 6-3 win over Mills at No. 6 singles.
Sharpe and Ivana Marevic helped the Panthers claim a quick 2-0 advantage with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and Sharpe also notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kate Hargrove at No. 3 singles.
Valerie Lempbrechts posted Drury's other win on the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles aginast Jody Wagner.
Lewis earned wins by Zsofia Kranczicki at No. 1 singles and from Kranczicki and Hargrove at No. 1 doubles.
Drury's Jarrod Smith was named the GLVC Coach of the Year following the tournament and his Panthers have also earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.
