Parkside Pounds Out 14 Hits in Win Over Carroll

Box Score

Somers, Wis.- The UW-Parkside baseball team scored seven runs in the seventh inning to help overcome an early deficit, en route to 11-5 win over Carroll University. The Rangers, who began a stretch of seven straight home games to end the season, are now 12-25 on the season.

“We’ve been due,” said Head Coach Joel Weaver. “It was nice to get back home, have some great weather, great fan support, and get a win. It gives us some confidence going into another tough weekend.”

Gentry VanAllen collected four hits and scored twice to lead the offensive attack. Corey Stonelake had three runs batted in while Mike Anderson, John Perszyk, and Kris Zarek each notched a couple of hits.

“Gentry had a great week of practice and has really worked hard with Coach Rivera to fix some things,” said Weaver. “I don’t want to say I expected him to have four hits but I had a feeling he’d have a good game.”

After falling behind early, the Rangers fought their way back before busting the door down with the big inning. They sent 11 men to the plate in the frame recording five hits and taking advantage of three Carroll errors.

Stonelake delivered a one-out single to drive in two and give the Rangers their first lead of the day at 5-4. VanAllen added an RBI-single and Zarek capped the inning with a two-run hit of his own to build a 10-4 cushion.

Josh Hudnut got the win in relief of starter Jacob Chandler. He entered in the fourth with the Rangers trailing 4-0. He went the next five innings allowing just one run on five hits without walking a batter.

“Josh came in and threw strikes with both his fastball and his curve ball,” said Weaver. “He definitely gave us the opportunity to come back with the way he threw.”

Carroll jumped out in front early with two runs in the second. After a two-out double, Joe Klobukowski came around to score on a throwing error to make it 1-0. Nick Sobrilsky came up two batters later with a double of his own to drive in the second run.

The Pioneers added two more in third when Matt Busse’s half-swing dropped down the third base line and hooked into foul territory. That allowed both runners to score to make it 4-0.

The Rangers started the fourth inning with three straight singles to load the bases. John Brennan bounced into a fielder’s choice to drive in the first run. Ben Korman’s slide into second forced an errant throw allowing another run to come across to reduce the deficit to two.

Anderson produced Parkside’s third run when he singled, stole two bases, and came around to score on a groundout by Stonelake. That set-up the big seventh inning that gave the Rangers the lead for good.

The added their final run in the eighth on a run-scoring groundout by Dave Lojeski.

The Rangers will finish up the season with three GLVC doubleheaders beginning this weekend at Oberbruner Field. Bellarmine University will be here Saturday and Sunday with both days scheduled to start at noon. They will wrap up the season Tuesday evening at Carthage with a 5:00 p.m. start against Lewis University.
