BOX SCORE
EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Diana Pickrum tossed a three-hit shutout and the Lewis softball team scored on a first-inning squeeze play in earning its second consecutive GLVC Championship on Sunday afternoon at the EastSide Centre with a 1-0 victory over No. 5 seed Quincy. The second-seeded Flyers were forced to a second game on Sunday afternoon after Quincy pulled out a 7-4 win in Sunday's first game.
In the final game on Sunday, sophomore Jamie Hefler opened the contest with a bunt single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch by Quincy starter Torie Bunzell.
Traci Freitag pushed Hefler to third base on a sacrifice bunt and following a walk to Michelle Vucsko put runners on first and third, Stephanie Harmon laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to bring Hefler home.
The lone run was all that Pickrum (16-4) would need as she allowed just three hits for the Hawks and struck out one.
Bunzell (29-11) was tagged with the loss, despite allowing just five hits in the contest. She was 5-2 on the weekend as she started all seven games for the Hawks.
With the victory, Lewis (34-12) collected its second consecutive league title and earns the league's automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
