SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The University of Southern Indiana swept the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, held Saturday, Oct. 20, at Springfield Underground in Springfield, Mo. USI claimed its conference-record eighth straight GLVC title and 20th overall, and was led by individual champion Michael Jordan with an 8K time of 24:39.10. The Screaming Eagles also took home their second straight and seventh overall women's crown, while Bellarmine's Angela Musk earned the individual title with a 6K time of 21:07.40.
The 2012 event marks the second straight year that Southern Indiana has taken both the men’s and women’s races. It’s also the second consecutive year that USI has picked up the individual men’s title as Brendan Devine captured last season’s title. Jordan finished runner-up in 2011 as did Bellarmine’s Musk, who became just the second Knight to win the GLVC title as Jennifer Scheerer captured back-to-back crowns in 2001 and 2002. While Jordan was a second faster than his second-place time last year, Musk shattered her own school record of 21:44 set at last year's GLVC Championship. Her 2012 time is also the third-fastest winning effort in GLVC history.
For their efforts, both Jordan and Musk were named the GLVC’s Runners of the Year.
On the men’s side, the Screaming Eagles captured the conference crown with 34 points, having placed four runners in the top 10, including Jordan, runner-up Tyler Pence (24:49.10) and seventh-place finisher Tyler Schickel (25:11.80), who earned GLVC Freshman of the Year honors. No. 15 Lewis was second overall with 67 points and led by Sean Smith (24:50.20), Andrew McLain (24:55.90) and Scott Tanis (25:11.10), who placed third, fourth and sixth, respectively. McKendree’s Blake DeLong (24:57.90) placed fifth overall while teammate Elkana Kipsang (25:17.50) was eighth to cap an impressive performance by the sixth-place Bearcats in their first-ever GLVC Cross Country Championship competition.
UW-Parkside placed third (86), followed by Indianapolis (131) and Drury (137) in the top five. Rounding out the field were McKendree (162), Bellarmine (194), Missouri S&T (200), Maryville (222), Saint Joseph’s (266), William Jewell (341) and Quincy (380). Kentucky Wesleyan fielded runners in the event, but did not record a team score.
As for the women, USI was guided by four runners in the top 10 for a team total of 42 points. Bellarmine, led by Musk and runner-up Emily Frith, finished second overall with 65 points. Indianapolis (119), Maryville (125) and UW-Parkside (131) rounded out the top five. Completing the field were Drury (157), Saint Joseph’s (172), Lewis (195), McKendree (247), Missouri S&T (256), William Jewell (294), Quincy (373) and Kentucky Wesleyan (388).
Individually, Musk and Frith (21:33.30) finished ahead of third-place finisher Erin Dolan (21:38.70) of Drury, USI’s Lauren Minor (21:50.40) and UW-Parkside’s (22:00.50). Maryville’s Samantha Hartnett (22:48.80) finished as the top freshman in 16th place to earn GLVC Freshman of the Year accolades.
After earning another sweep, USI’s Mike Hillyard took home his seventh women’s and 10th men’s GLVC Coach of the Year honor.
