Indianapolis’ Gardner and Royer Named GLVC Men’s Track & Field Honorees

INDIANAPOLIS –Junior Robert Gardner (Gary, IN/Lew Wallace) has been tabbed the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, while senior Matt Royer (Avon, IN/Avon) earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after their performances over the weekend. 

Gardner, a junior, headed to Bloomington to compete at Indiana University over the weekend. Gardner took fourth at the invitational portion of the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.14. His time was good for an NCAA provisional mark and ranks among the top ten qualifiers so far this season.

Senior Matt Royer of Indianapolis earned the men’s field athlete of the week for the second time this year after his performance at the Indiana Wesleyan Invite. Royer took first in the men’s weight throw with a 20.46 meter toss. The throw not only established another NCAA qualifying mark, but also recorded new meet and field house records. Royer then posted an NCAA provisional mark in the shot put after his 16.22 meter effort. The toss was good for third place at the event.
 
Up next for the Indianapolis men’s track and field team is another trip to Bloomington for the Indiana DII Open.
