INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University sophomore Zsofia Lanstiak has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, as voted on by the league coaches. Lanstiak was also a unanimous No. 1 selection to the All-Conference team, which was announced Thursday evening at the 2012 GLVC Tennis Championship awards banquet in Springfield, Mo. In addition to Lanstiak’s honor, Drury newcomer Stefanie Monsch was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year.
Lanstiak, a native of Budapest, Hungary, finished the regular season with an impressive 32-2 singles record and a 32-2 mark in doubles, guiding her Flyers to a 20-2 mark, including 6-0 in conference play for the outright GLVC East Division crown. She is the first Flyer to earn the conference’s top honor since Yuliya Kuznets was selected as the league’s Player of the Year in 2005.
Monsch becomes the first Panther to be named GLVC Freshman of the Year since Drury joined the conference in 2004. A native of Dornstetten, Germany, Monsch is currently ranked fifth regionally at No. 1 doubles with a 17-2 mark, including a perfect 6-0 record at No. 1 against tandems from the GLVC West. She accumulated a 14-4 singles record this year on various courts, most notably at No. 3 with a 9-3 mark. Monsch was also a perfect 6-0 at No. 3 singles when facing teams from the GLVC West. Her efforts helped Drury to a 16-3 overall record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in conference play for the outright GLVC West Division title.
Monsch’s teammate, junior Beatriz Juan, was unanimously selected as the No. 1 player from the West Division for All-Conference honors. Lanstiak, Monsch, and Juan were joined by Bellarmine’s Rebecca Porter, Drury’s Pelagie Gamo, Indianapolis’ Maggie Ashby, Kelsey Matthews and Alena Perez-Majul, Lewis’ Zsofia Kranczicki, Missouri-St. Louis’ Louisa Werner, Northern Kentucky’s Marta Romeo and Claire Spradlin, Quincy’s Pam Ganer, Rockhurst’s Karsyn Betts and Maureen Rielley, Saint Joseph’s Marie Kegley, and William Jewell’s Paula Peters.
The All-Conference team is made up of 16 members, however a 17th selection was honored this year due to a tie.
The 2012 GLVC Coach of the Year will be awarded to the coach of the winning team at the conclusion of the 2012 GLVC Women’s Tennis Championship, which runs Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, in Springfield, Mo.
