INDIANAPOLIS – Four Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball teams were among the six squads selected late Sunday night to the 2012 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Midwest Regional. The University of Indianapolis, which earned the GLVC Championship Sunday afternoon, is the No. 1 seed in the region, followed by No. 4 Northern Kentucky University, No. 5 Rockhurst University, and No. 6 Lewis University.
The Midwest Regional will be contested at Eastern Michigan University’s Oestrike Stadium, May 17-21. Game times will be announced at a later date.
UIndy (42-14) will open yet another double-elimination tournament against the sixth-seeded Flyers (33-20), who shocked the Greyhounds 8-2 this past Thursday in an opening-round game of the GLVC Baseball Championship Tournament in Evansville, Ind. Indianapolis rebounded against Lewis on Friday with an 11-inning 1-0 thriller that cleared yet another hurdle for the Greyhounds en route to their conference title.
Northern Kentucky (35-20) fell 4-3 to Indianapolis in the GLVC Championship game, but earned the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Regional and will square off against No. 3 seed Wayne State (34-19), which finished runner-up at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament.
Fifth-seeded Rockhurst (32-17) opens against No. 2 seed and GLIAC Champion Grand Valley State (41-14).
Regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 26-June 2 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The finals will be hosted by Mount Olive and the town of Cary, N.C.
