INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Great Lakes Valley Conference recently earned 13 All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 24-26, at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl. The event was highlighted by eight All-Americans from the University of Indianapolis, including a runner-up performance in the hammer throw by Matt Royer – the 2012 GLVC Field Athlete of the Year.
Royer’s efforts helped lead the Greyhounds to a total of 25 points and an 11th-place finish overall in the 56-team field. Missouri S&T finished 28th with 7 points, while the University of Southern Indiana and Saint Joseph’s College placed tied for 31st and 53rd, respectively.
In the opening day of competition, Royer and Ryan Smith duplicated their performances in the weight throw from the indoor season, with Royer taking second (65.29m) and Smith taking fifth (63.38m).
UIndy’s Randall Hudi also earned All-America accolades on Thursday, taking sixth in the long jump with a leap of 7.51 meters.
Southern Indiana senior Dustin Emerick finished sixth in the 10,000 meters on Thursday, concluding his career as a four-time All-American in cross country and track. His teammate Michael Jordan finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday evening.
Jermel Kindredtook fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles, with a personal best of 51.65 to earn the first UIndy podium finish on Saturday. He then earned All-America distinction along with Robert Gardner, Jerel Flournoy and Kyle Schwartz in the 4x400-meter relay, following a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:10.72.
Missouri S&T boasted two All-Americans in Terry Robinson and Dan Hellwig. Earlier in the day on Saturday, Hellwig recorded his second All-America performance of the season, clearing 16-2 3/4 for a fourth-place finish in the high jump. Later in the evening, Robinson turned in a seventh-place result in the 400-meter hurdles (51.80).
Also on Saturday, Kaleb Thompson ended his career for Saint Joseph’s College by placing eighth in the shot put with a toss of 17.08 meters.
Finishing just outside All-America distinction on the women’s side were Bellarmine’s Angela Musk (10th) and UW-Parkside’s Hope Christie (12th) in the 1500 meters, and Lewis’ Samantha Linck (13th) and Drury’s Emilie Gray (19th).
