The 2012-13 Great Lakes Valley Conference indoor track and field seasons came to a close this past weekend at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., where several GLVC teams and student-athletes turned in solid performances.
The University of Indianapolis was the conference’s top men’s finisher, placing sixth overall. Led by five All-America finishes, the Greyhounds’ had 30 points from senior Ryan Smith, who took home the national championship in the shot put and a second-place finish in the weight throw, while Jerel Flournoy (6th, 4x400 Relay and 3rd, Long Jump), Robert Gardner, III (6th, 400 Meters and 6th, 4x400 Relay), Jereml Kindred (6th, 4x400 Relay), and Quinntyn Qualls (6th, 4x400 Relay) also earned this prestigious honor.
Bellarmine had its Distance Medley Relay team place sixth at the national meet and all four members – Nate Dotterweich, Jared Findlater, Sean Klosterman, and Robert Sandlin – were named All-Americans. The Knights finished 36th overall at the championships.
Lewis’ Andrew Mclain also earned All-America prestige after garnering an 8th place finish in the 5,000 meters. Southern Indiana’s Michael Jordan was a two-time All-American in the 3,000- (7th place) and 5,000-meter events (4th place).
Saint Augustine earned the men’s national championship with a team score of 72.
On the women’s side, Bellarmine’s Meghan Jones received All-America honors for her eighth-place finish in the High Jump. Jones is the second high jumper for Bellarmine to receive this honor and first since Laura Eppstein in 2005.
The Academy of Art earned the women’s national championship with a team score of 59.
Prior to the NCAA Championships, a total of 91 conference standouts earned All-Midwest Region distinctions, led by Indianapolis’ Flournoy and Kindred with four honors each.
