ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis has secured the lead after day one of the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which began Friday at Lewis Field on the campus of Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.

The UIndy men’s team, winners of five GLVC titles, including the last three, scored 43 points in the first day of action.  Southern Indiana is second with 35 points, while Lewis (27), Saint Joseph’s (25), and Missouri S&T (22) take up spots third through fifth, respectively.  Rounding out the top-10 is UW-Parkside (16), Bellarmine (12), McKendree (10), Drury (9), and Maryville (2).

On the women’s side, the Greyhounds are in position for their fifth-consecutive GLVC Championship as their 43 points are 15 markers better than second-place Saint Joseph’s with 28.  Drury (23) is third after day one, while Lewis (22) and Southern Indiana (22) sit tied for fourth.  Bellarmine (17), McKendree (14), and Maryville (12) are sixth through eighth, while Missouri S&T (8.5), William Jewell (5) and UW-Parkside (0.5) round out the field.

The highlight of the first day came in the 10,000-meter run.  Drury’s Erin Dolan shattered the GLVC Championship record with a winning time of 36:13.94, some 38 seconds better than Lewis’ Kasie Arient mark of 36:51.80 set back in 1999.  Dolan becomes the first Panther runner in program history to claim a 10,000-meter title at the GLVC Outdoor Championship.

In the men’s 10,000 meters, Southern Indiana’s Tyler Pence earned the GLVC title in 31:17.17.

It was another pair of wins at long distance for USI as Lauren Minor scored a victory in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a winning time of 11:11.41, while Michael Jordan took home first in the same event on the men’s side with a time of 9:16.44.

The shot put and triple jump were also contested Friday, as well as the hammer throw.

In the hammer throw, UIndy’s Tim Lovejoy was crowned GLVC Champion with a winning heave of 57.10 meters, while teammate Farin Hickman (48.08m) secured first on the women’s side.  Hickman (13.02m) also took home first in the shot put, as did fellow Hound Joshua Birdwell (15.68m) on the men’s side.

In the triple jump, Lewis’ Amber Cook excelled before the home crowd with a first-place leap of 11.56 meters, while Saint Joseph’s Joe Tooks won gold on the men’s side with a distance of 14.55 meters.
Preliminaries were contested in several other events, and the pole vault was moved to Saturday due to inclement weather conditions earlier in the day.

The final day of the 2013 GLVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. CT at Lewis Field.
