2014 Tournament Bracket

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2014 Deaconess GLVC Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket was released by the conference office Thursday evening following the finale of the 2013-14 regular season.  Twelve of the league’s 16 schools advanced to the postseason tournament, with four schools earning first-round byes.  The remaining eight teams will open the conference tournament on campus Sunday with hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals, which take place at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., March 7-9.

GLVC West Division Champion Drury (24-2, 16-2 GLVC) captured the No. 1 overall seed for the tournament and is set to return to the Ford Center, where it began its national championship run last season by first garnering the conference title.

UW-Parkside (22-5, 15-3) went on the road Thursday night and defeated Lewis 76-70 to earn a share of the GLVC East Division title with Indianapolis.  The Rangers earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament as they own a 9-1 record in divisional play this season, while UIndy was 8-2.

Co-East Division Champion Indianapolis (23-3, 15-3) garners the No. 3 seed by way of the tiebreak and earns the coveted first-round bye along with No. 4 seed Lewis (21-5, 13-5).  The Flyers finished the regular season tied with Southern Indiana and Truman State at 13-5 in league play, but was awarded the final bye after two different tiebreaks.  Lewis was 3-2 on the road in the East this season, while USI was 2-3, which then pitted the Flyers against Truman State in the West.  An 82-80 road win at Missouri-St. Louis on Jan. 11 was the difference as Truman fell 80-65 in St. Louis on Feb. 22.

Truman (20-6, 13-5) took the No. 5 seed from USI based on its 71-68 overtime home win over the Screaming Eagles on Jan. 30.  The Bulldogs will open the tournament at home at 3 p.m. CT on Sunday against No. 12 Illinois Springfield (9-17, 5-13), which earned its way in over Quincy via a tiebreak 106-99 road win over the Hawks on Jan. 11.  Just two days prior to that win, UIS lost 76-70 at Truman.

Southern Indiana (21-5, 13-5) enters the postseason as the No. 6 seed and welcomes No. 11 Maryville (13-13, 7-11) to Evansville for a 3:15 p.m. tip on Sunday.  USI defeated Maryville 64-61 in Evansville on Feb. 13.

No. 7 Bellarmine (20-6, 12-6) returns to Knights Hall on Sunday to host No. 10 William Jewell (11-15, 7-11) in first-round action.  The Cardinals earned the 10th seed by virtue of a 76-70 road win at Maryville on Feb. 1.  The 3 p.m. ET tip-off will be a rematch of the 2014 conference opener when Bellarmine defeated Jewell 73-63 in Liberty, Mo., on Jan. 3.

In the fourth contest of the opening round, No. 8 Missouri-St. Louis (15-11, 9-9) welcomes No. 9 Missouri S&T (12-14, 7-11) at 3 p.m. CT on Sunday.  The Miners, which earned the ninth seed by sporting a combined 3-0 record against other 7-11 teams William Jewell and Maryville this year, defeated UMSL 85-79 in Rolla, Mo., on Jan. 25.

Following Sunday’s four first-round contests, the winners will be reseeded Nos. 5-8 and placed accordingly against the tournament’s top four seeds.
