Day 1 Results
INDIANAPOLIS – The Missouri S&T men and Lewis University women hold the lead after the first day of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Athletics & Recreation Center on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
The Miner men scored 58 points on Friday and hold a 22-point advantage over Lewis’s 36 points. Southern Indiana sits third overall with 22 points, followed by host Indianapolis (23) and Bellarmine (11) in the top five. Saint Joseph’s (9), Truman State (7), Maryville (6), UW-Parkside (5) and McKendree (4) are placed sixth through 10th, respectively. Drury (2) and William Jewell (1) rounded out the 12-team field.
On the women’s side, the Flyers opened a commanding lead after the first day, scoring 81 points that was nearly three-times as much as host UIndy (30) in second. McKendree (14) owns third place, while Bellarmine, Missouri S&T, and Southern Indiana are tied for fourth with 12 points each. Saint Joseph’s (9) is seventh, followed by Maryville (8) and Truman State (8) in a tie for eighth, and UW-Parkside (6) and William Jewell (3) in 10th and 11th. Drury did not score in limited action Friday.
In the women’s pentathlon, Lewis’ Megan Marchildon set a conference record with 3,627 points, besting the previous mark of 3,506, which was set by Lewis’ Christine Kustr in 2009. Marchildon earned her third GLVC Indoor Pentathlon title, having also won in 2011 and 2012.
In the long jump, Lewis’ Samantha McGaha (5.74m) and Phoenix Smallwood (5.71m) took the first two positions with NCAA provisional marks, while McKendree’s LaTia Jefferson (5.56m) also met the qualifying standard with a third-place finish. On the men’s side, UIndy’s Joshuah Bass (7.37m) and Missouri S&T’s Jusean Archibald (7.24m) also garnered provisional marks in their first and second-place finishes, respectively.
Lewis sophomore Kristen Bonsor entered the 5,000 meters seeded 11 seconds slower than Southern Indiana senior Erika Wilson, but Bonsor turned the tables and captured the event title by eight seconds in an NCAA provisional time of 17:25.39. Wilson finished second at 17:33.59, followed by Lewis’ Jaime Hershfang (17:34.14) and Maryville’s Elizabeth Kiblinger (17:45.46) – all in provisional times.
On the men’s side, a remarkable 21 provisional marks were set in the field, led by Southern Indiana’s Johnnie Guy (14:26.10) and Tyler Pence (14:31.80) in first and second.
Picking up where they left off at the 2013 GLVC Outdoor meet where they tied for first, Missouri S&T’s Ryan McGuire (4.66m) and Cord Durand (4.66) earned the gold and silver medal in the pole vault, while the Miners also finished in fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth in the event.
Twenty-three of the Greyhounds’ 30 points came in the weight throw as Farin Hickman (17.60m), Tatiana Zhuravleva (17.23m) and Lissette Mendivil (16.07m) finished first, second and fourth, respectively, while Lewis’ Roslyn Summerville (16.74m) was third. All four reached NCAA provisional status, just as the top three finishers did on the men’s side. UIndy’s Tim Lovejoy (19.09m), Lewis’ Adam Barr (19.04m) and Missouri S&T’s Joseph Vellella (17.68m) finished 1-2-3 in the event.
In the nightcap, Lewis (12:05.60) and Bellarmine (12:16.46) picked up provisional standards in the women’s distance medley relay, while Southern Indiana (10:05.74) and Lewis (10:06.77) did the same on the men’s side.
Preliminaries were also held in 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles, as well as the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
Saturday’s action gets underway at 9 a.m. ET with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, while field events commence at 11:30 a.m., followed by the first running event – the women’s mile – at 1:30 p.m.
Last year UIndy earned its fourth consecutive conference title on the men’s side, while Bellarmine became the first GLVC team to win back-to-back women’s titles since Lewis captured the 2010 and 2011 crowns.
