ST. LOUIS – Lewis University senior Zsofia Kranczicki has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, it was announced by the conference office at the 2014 GLVC Tennis Championship banquet Thursday evening in St. Louis, Mo. Kranczicki’s mentor, Brett Bridel, was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year, while Maryville newcomer Philine Schlorf was tabbed as GLVC Freshman of the Year. In addition, Kranczicki and Schlorf were joined by 14 others as All-Conference selections.
Kranczicki, a native of Eger, Hungary, finished the regular season with an impressive 25-3 singles record and a 26-2 mark in doubles. She was a perfect 7-0 at No. 2 and 7-1 at No. 1 singles, and was 14-1 at No. 1 doubles this season with partner Zsofia Lanstiak – the 2012 and 2013 GLVC Player of the Year. This year, Kranczicki was the Midwest Regional singles champion and also earned the doubles title with Lanstiak. The duo finished third overall at the USTA/ITA National Small College Doubles Championships for the second time in their career. In singles play, she currently ranks No. 1 in the Midwest Region and is No. 24 in the country, while in doubles action, she is No. 1 in the Midwest and No. 3 nationally.
Schlorf’s distinction as the conference’s top freshman marks the first time Maryville has earned the newcomer award. During her first season with the Saints, the Hamburg, Germany, native went 24-4 in singles, including a 19-3 mark at the No. 1 spot and 12-4 in doubles, primarily at the No. 1 position.
Bridel earns his third consecutive GLVC Coach of the Year honor and garners the fourth such award for Lewis in conference history as Jill Siegfried was recognized in 2004. The Flyers’ head coach led his squad to a 6-0 mark in conference play and the outright GLVC East Division crown, while winning the last eight matches to move to 12-3 on the season. In addition to Kranczicki, Bridel also mentored Lanstiak, sophomore Megan Nguyen, and freshman Ana Marija Banic to All-Conference distinction.
The 16-member All-Conference squad, which combined eight individuals for both the East and West Divisions, was headlined by the four Lewis honorees. In addition to the quartet and Maryville’s Schlorf, Drury sophomore Hadeil Ali grabbed headlines as the lone unanimous All-Conference honoree. The remaining All-GLVC selections included Bellarmine junior Evann Waschuk, Drury freshman Lara Muller and sophomore Stephanie Monsch, Indianapolis sophomore Allie Smith, McKendree seniors Adriana Gonzalez and Giuliana Gonzalez, Missouri-St. Louis junior Lina Parra and senior Louisa Werner, Quincy freshman Amy Kuhle, and Rockhurst freshman Emma Schelble.
