INDIANAPOLIS – The efforts of University of Indianapolis and McKendree University, along with 13 sub-par rounds turned in by the entire field, grabbed the headlines on the first day of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship, which is being held April 20-22 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.
The defending conference champion Greyhounds, who have claimed a league-best 14 titles, scorched the 6,897-yard, par-72 layout over 36 holes today, especially in the afternoon round when UIndy netted a team total of 9-under-par 279. Tucker Guisewite, Andrew VanAelst and Max Bowling each carded rounds of 3-under 69, while the morning round was highlighted by David Frank’s 4-under 68.
Indianapolis (289-279—568) owns a nine-stroke advantage over newcomer McKendree (288-289—577), which is in its first year of eligibility to compete for the GLVC title. The Bearcats were paced on the day by three golfers at par or better, including Garrett Sneed (73-69—142) at 2-under, Nathan Nottrott (72-71—143) at minus-1, and Lewis Martin (71-73—144) at level par.
Lewis University (298-282—580), which fell to UIndy in last year’s match-play final, sits third overall thanks in large part to a 6-under team total of 282 in the afternoon session. Jeremy Fraser carded a second-round, 4-under 68 to tie Frank for low round of the day, while Robert Dofflemyer rebounded from an opening 74 to return to par following a 2-under 70 in the afternoon.
The University of Missouri-St Louis (292-289—581) enters the tournament’s final 18 holes of stroke play in the coveted fourth position, as the top four finishing teams following 54 holes of stroke play advance to match play competition, which will determine the GLVC Champion on Tuesday.
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside (298-291—589) is fifth overall, followed by Rockhurst University (302-300-602), William Jewell College (297-308—605) and the University of Illinois Springfield (306-300-606) in places sixth through eighth, respectively. Drury University (304-305—609) and the University of Southern Indiana (300-309—609) sit tied for ninth overall, while Bellarmine University (310-300—610), Saint Joseph’s College (308-315—623), Maryville University (317-310—627), and Quincy University (316-320—636) round out the 14-team field.
Medalist honors will be awarded after Monday’s final round of stroke play and seven players currently sit in red numbers below par, while another three are even through 36 holes. UIndy’s Frank (68-72—140) holds a one shot advantage over teammate Guisewite (72-69—141) and UMSL’s Anthony Cope (71-70—141). McKendree’s Sneed is fourth overall at 2-under 142 (73-69), which was last year’s winning score.
Also of note Sunday, the 4-under 68 shot by UIndy’s Frank and Lewis’ Fraser is the lowest round recorded at the GLVC Championship since UW-Parkside’s Andrew Troyanek fired a 68 in the opening round of his 36-hole tournament victory in 2011. Additionally, the Greyhounds’ 279 was the lowest team 18-hole score since UIndy carded a 276 in its final round to win the 2009 GLVC Championship, which was also held at Otter Creek. Conference records also indicate that Lewis’ second-round 282 was the lowest round for the Flyers at the GLVC Championship in at least 20 years (and possibly in program history). Lewis turned in a second-round 285 last year, while league records currently list round-by-round team scores dating back to the 1994 conference championship, which Lewis won with a score of 891.
Monday’s final stroke-play round tees off at 8 a.m. ET.
Complete results, along with the announcement of the first five positions of the 10-member All-Conference team, will be announced on GLVCsports.com following the event.
