COLUMBUS, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis has successfully defended its Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship after defeating the University of Missouri-St. Louis 3-2 in medal/match play competition Tuesday at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind. UIndy earned its conference-best 15th league title and has now captured back-to-back titles for the first time since the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Both the Greyhounds and Tritons earned 4.5-0.5 medal/match play semifinal victories earlier on Tuesday over Lewis University and McKendree University, respectively, to advance to the afternoon finals. For the two finalists, the final round proved to be a five-match battle worthy of a heavyweight bout as each five-member team completed the grueling 108-hole, four-day format.
In the championship final, which involved UIndy head coach Brent Nicoson and UMSL mentor Troy Halterman setting the pairings in a Ryder Cup format prior to the afternoon session (
see video here), no one team ever had more than a one-point lead.
Missouri-St. Louis struck first in the match with Colby Yates defeating Max Bowling, 74-79. UIndy’s Andrew VanAelst was arguably the anchor for the Greyhounds despite going out second in both the semifinal and final matches. VanAelst posted a pair of rounds at 2-under 70 to go 2-0 in match play on a windy day in Columbus where the combined 30-round stroke average was 76.6. His 11-stroke win over UMSL’s Anthony Cope brought the championship match back to all square.
The Tritons quickly responded as Julien de Poyen answered with a two-shot win over UIndy’s Evan Stoker, 75-77. In the fourth match of the day, the Hounds’ David Frank outlasted UMSL’s Warren Crow in a back-and-forth thriller, 76-77.
With the team matchup once again all square, the fifth and final match featured 2013 GLVC Champion Joe Atkisson of Missouri-St. Louis against 2014 GLVC Champion Tucker Guisewite of Indianapolis. Guisewite fired a 73 in the afternoon to earn a four-stroke victory against Atkisson’s 77.
While match play scoring was used to determine the team winners, UIndy netted a five-count-four team score of 296, while Missouri-St. Louis carded a 303.
The conference title not only extended the Hounds’ league dominance in the sport, as their 15 titles nearly equal the three nearest former champions in Lewis (6 titles), Northern Kentucky (6) and Bellarmine (5), but it also earned them the GLVC’s automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Championships.
