Missouri S&T Men, UIndy Women Lead Day 1 at GLVC Outdoor Track

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Missouri S&T men's and University of Indianapolis women's squads currently sit in first place following Friday's opening day of the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Lewis Stadium on the campus of Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.

The Miners posted 58 points on Friday and own a 13-point advantage over second-place Indianapolis (45) and host Lewis (36).  The University of Southern Indiana (35), Saint Joseph's College (20), and University of Wisconsin-Parkside (10) are fourth through sixth, respectively, while Bellarmine University (8), William Jewell College (8) and McKendree University (8) are tied for seventh, and Truman State University (5) and Drury University (1) round out the scoring in the 12-team field.

On the women's side, UIndy holds a 63-39 advantage over the host Flyers, while Southern Indiana (23) sits third and Missouri S&T (20) and McKendree (20) are tied for fourth.  Truman (19) is sixth, UW-Parkside (15) is seventh, and Maryville University (13), Saint Joseph's (9), William Jewell (8) and Bellarmine (5) rounded out scoring.

Among the highlights on Friday, Missouri S&T's Taylor Cipicchio and Lewis' Rebecca Preisler each set a new conference record in the pole vault as their clearance of 3.69 meters bested the previous league mark 3.58m set in 2012.  Cipicchio was credited with the full 10 points and the conference title.

McKendree's LaTia Jefferson eclipsed the GLVC standard of 11.94m in the triple jump with a new conference mark of 11.98m to take the league crown.

UW-Parkside's Jess Watychowicz shattered the GLVC record in the 10,000 meters with a NCAA provisional time of 35:22.26, some 90 seconds faster than the previous mark set by Kasie Arient (36:51.80) in 1999.

In the same event, Lewis' Andrew McLain crossed the tape in 31:11.10, a second faster than Dustin Emerick's previous GLVC record of 31:12.34 in 2009.

Additional GLVC Champions crowned Friday included Missouri S&T's Ryan McGuire (5.06m) in the pole vault and Adriel Hawkins (14.31m) in the triple jump, UIndy's Tatiana Zhuravleva (14.43m) and Joshua Bridwell (16.76m) in the shot put, the Greyhounds' Farin Hickman (54.70m) and S&T's Joseph Vellella (61.59m) in the hammer throw, and USI's Augusta Schrader (11:18.76) and Michael Callison (9:05.38) in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase.

All totaled, 26 NCAA provisional qualifying marks were set on the opening day of the meet.

Sunday's final day gets underway with multi-events at 9 a.m. CT, followed by field events at noon and running finals at 3 p.m.
