INDIANAPOLIS – The GLVC Sports Network (GLVCSN) will air live semifinal and championship match coverage of this week’s GLVC Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championship Tournaments, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Wednesday.
The 2018 edition is the third time in the 40-year history of the league that both the men and the women will be playing at a neutral site, which is being held at the Woehrle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Nov. 2 and 4. The Woehrle Athletic Complex has also served as an alternate practice venue for Louisville City FC of the United Soccer League (USL).
John Edwards will be on the call for all six matches this weekend.
For the first time in men’s tournament history, all the even seeds have advanced to the semifinals, which also marks the third straight year and eighth overall occasion that two lower-seeded teams (No. 5-6-7-8) have won their opening round contest.
The first contest kicks at 12 p.m. ET with No. 2 Bellarmine University and No. 6 McKendree University battling in the first men’s semifinal. Coverage then features the men’s second semifinal between No. 4 Maryville University and No. 8 Rockhurst University at 2:30 p.m. ET.
On the women’s side, all the odd seeds have advanced to the semifinals for the first time in tournament history. Only twice before (2008, 2014) have two teams outside the top-four seeds advanced to semifinal competition, and it’s just the second occasion in seven years where all top-four teams have not made the semis.
The women take to the pitch Friday evening as No. 3 University of Southern Indiana will battle No. 7 Rockhurst at 6 p.m. ET, followed by the second women’s semifinal at 8:30 p.m. ET, pitting No. 1 seed Truman State University against No. 5 seed Bellarmine.
Championship finals commence on Sunday with the men’s at 12 p.m. ET and the women’s at 3 p.m. ET.
This season marks the 40th year of the GLVC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. Southern Indiana has won the GLVC Men's Soccer Championship a record 10 times with the Eagles last title coming in 1991. Indianapolis owns two overall, while Drury, Quincy, and former Conference members IPFW and UW-Parkside have each claimed one league crown.
Last year, No. 4 seed UIndy scored in the 90th minute to defeat No. 7 Southern Indiana, 1-0.
This season marks the 25th year of the GLVC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. Former GLVC members Northern Kentucky and UW-Parkside lead the Conference with seven and five league titles, respectively, followed by McKendree, Quincy and another former member Saint Joseph's with two each. Five schools have claimed one GLVC Championship apiece, including Bellarmine, Drury, Indianapolis, Lewis, and Truman State.
Last year, No. 2 seed McKendree earned its second-straight GLVC crown with a 3-0 blanking of top-seeded Quincy.
