EVANSVILLE, Indiana – The University of Southern Indiana extended its league record with its 15th consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday at a rainy and windy Angel Mounds, located just 20 minutes from its campus in Evansville, Indiana.

The eighth-ranked Screaming Eagles totaled 47 points on the day to give them their league-best 27th GLVC crown, while the current streak of 15 straight titles is the longest for any team in any sport in Conference history.

University of Illinois Springfield finished a program-best second at the GLVC Championships, placing four of its five scorers inside the top 15 to earn All-Conference recognition.  The Prairie Stars have now finished 13th, 10th, eighth, third and now runner-up in the last five years.

University of Indianapolis placed third overall with 98 points, followed by Missouri S&T (107) in fourth and league newcomers Southwest Baptist University (154) and Lindenwood University (172) in fifth and sixth, respectively.  Bellarmine University (185), Lewis University (191), Truman State University (245) and Maryville University (257) finished seventh through 10th.  Rounding out the 15-team field was Drury University (279), Rockhurst University (390), McKendree University (430) and Quincy University (449).  William Jewell College competed but did not produce a team score.

For the third consecutive season and eighth time over the past nine years, a Screaming Eagle crossed the line first.  After a runner-up finish to two-time GLVC champion Austin Nolan, sophomore Titus Winders went from GLVC Freshman of the Year in 2018 to GLVC Runner of the Year in 2019 with a winning 8,000-meter time of 25 minutes, 4.95 seconds.

Illinois Springfield sophomore Wyatt McIntyre finished 17 seconds behind Winders in second with a time of 25:21.31, just ahead of third-place finisher and UIndy sophomore Chris Switzer (25:22.00).  Lindenwood senior Austin Crowe (25:27.01) placed fourth overall, while USI’s Nolan (25:29.60) was fifth.  Illinois Springfield took sixth and seventh places as sophomore Blake Jones (25:32.98) crossed the line ahead of junior Tyler Pasley (25:35.36).  USI senior Nathan Hall (25:37.38) was eighth, followed by Missouri S&T senior Duncan Clark (25:54.20) and sophomore Andrew Lofgren (25:54.29) in the top 10.  Lindenwood sophomore Benjamin Stasney (25:54.30), Bellarmine junior Reid Masterson (25:55.20), Southwest Baptist junior Tyler Goatley (25:58.29), USI junior Gavin Prior (26:00.13) and Illinois Springfield senior Tyler Hiserote (26:00.47) secured All-GLVC honors with top-15 finishes.

At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, Bellarmine newcomer Michael Brizendine (26:24.45) was honored as GLVC Freshman of the Year with his 28th-place finish.  Southern Indiana mentor Mike Hillyard was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year, marking his 15th-straight honor and 17th overall.

At Friday’s GLVC Championship banquet, Missouri S&T earned the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award for men’s cross country.  In addition, 15 student-athletes were recognized as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees and are now candidates for their respective school’s male Spalding Sportsmanship Award at the end of the academic year.
