EAST PEORIA, Ill. - No. 1 University of Missouri-St. Louis has won the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championship after defeating No. 2 and 12th-ranked University of Indianapolis, 1-0, at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois, Sunday afternoon.

With its 14th-straight win, Missouri-St. Louis (35-17) collects its fifth league title in program history and the first since 2017 while also earning the Conference's automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Division II Tournament. This was third all-time meeting between the two teams for the coveted hardware, as the Tritons took the trophy home in 2015 and the Greyhounds nabbed it in 2016.

After battling through 10 innings of a pitchers' duel yesterday in the winners' bracket, the championship contest this afternoon between UMSL and UIndy was looking to be heading in a similar direction. Through 6.5 innings, just four hits had been given up by a pair of pitchers that also combined for 20 strikeouts, as UMSL's Carly Kingery hurled eight and UIndy's Halie Waters fanned 12 batters.

In the top half of the seventh inning, Kingery struck out the side with all three batters going down swinging to set the stage in the bottom half of the inning. Waters began by striking out the first batter but walked the second. The third batter popped up to center after Jessica Mrzlak advanced to second on a wild pitch. Reagan Osborn then got on base after getting hit by a pitch. Enter Chelsea Martinez and her two-out, walk-off RBI single. Taking a ball on the first pitch, the senior first baseman used the second pitch to line a grounder up the middle just past the outstretched glove of a diving second baseman to bring in pinch runner Lizzy Miller before the throw from center field could reach home plate.

Both UMSL and UIndy will learn their opponents for the NCAA regional when the announcement is made Monday morning at 10 a.m. ET. The selection show can be seen live on NCAA.com.
