INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Illinois Springfield and Southwest Baptist University have earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award for men’s and women’s cross country, respectively, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The men’s honor is the third overall award for UIS as the Prairie Stars claimed the award in 2015 and 2018. Having just won its first GLVC Championship three days ago, the SBU women’s team takes home its first-ever James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award.
The two programs earned the award following a vote by the league’s 15 coaches.
In addition to the two team awards, 15 male and 15 female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were also recognized. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
