McKendree Wins Third Straight GLVC Wrestling Championship

INDIANAPOLIS – For the third consecutive season, McKendree University has captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Wrestling Championship after completing another perfect league record of 6-0 Sunday at Maryville University’s Moloney Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.

The second-ranked Bearcats entered Sunday’s action in first place at 4-0 and polished off its unbeaten league slate with a 29-15 victory over Bellarmine University and a 27-10 decision over the University of Indianapolis.

No. 7 Lindenwood University posted a runner-up finish in its first season competing under the GLVC umbrella with a 5-1 mark.  Bellarmine, Indianapolis and Maryville finished in a three-way tie for third at 3-3, followed by Drury University (1-5) and Ouachita Baptist University (0-6).

At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, McKendree 197-pound junior Ryan Vasbinder was voted by the league coaches as the unanimous GLVC Wrestler of the Year, becoming the second Bearcat to win the award, as Darren Wynn took home the top honor in 2018.  UIndy 157-pound newcomer Dawson Combest was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year, while McKendree’s James Kisgen was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season. 

Twenty individuals were named to All-GLVC teams, including 10 on both the first and second-team squads, while nine additional standouts earned honorable mention recognition.  McKendree led all schools with seven All-GLVC selections, followed by Lindenwood (6), Bellarmine (2), UIndy (2), Drury (1), Maryville (1), and Ouachita Baptist (1).

Seven of the 10 first-team honorees were unanimous selections including Drury’s Jared Rennick (285), Lindenwood’s Tanner Hitchcock (133) and Colby Smith (141), and McKendree’s Marcus Povlick (125), Nick Foster (165), Josh Jones (174), and Vasbinder (197).

Bellarmine earned its second-straight GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award in the sport.  In addition, seven student-athletes were recognized as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees and are now candidates for their respective school’s male Spalding Sportsmanship Award at the end of the academic year.
