EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's cross country team finished as the runners-up at the 2021 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Indiana, hosted by University of Southern Indiana on Saturday, Nov. 6, while Screaming Eagles' senior Jennifer Comastri won the individual regional title. Eight other Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) programs competed in the 6,000-meter race.
With 110 points, the 11th-ranked Flyers finished 70 points behind regional champion second-ranked Grand Valley State and 68 points ahead of the next best GLVC team, 15th-ranked Lewis, which placed fifth.
Behind Lewis was 20th-ranked Southwest Baptist University in eighth (235 points), followed by Drury University (324) in 11th, and University of Indianapolis (382), Lindenwood University (450), and University of Illinois Springfield (481) came in at No. 14, 16, and 18, respectively. Missouri S&T (556) was 20th, while Truman State University (652) rounded out the league contingent in 22nd.
The top-25 individual finishers were named All-Region honorees, and the GLVC had 12 in that group – USI and Lewis led the way with three each, while both SBU and Drury had two with one each from Lindenwood and UIS. Comastri won the race with a time of 20:24.5, which was 47-seconds faster than her winning time (21:11.26) at the GLVC Championship on Oct. 23. The next fastest Conference individual was Lindenwood's Najwa Chouati, who was fifth with a time of 20:55.0, just 3-seconds faster than Drury's Claire McCune (20:58.0) in sixth.
USI, as a top-three finisher, automatically qualified for the the NCAA Championships, which will take place Nov. 20 at the Abbey Course in Saint Leo, Florida.
