UIndy, Maryville Head to GLVC Men's Soccer Title Match

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The 2020-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Soccer Championship will be decided between the top two seeds on Sunday, when No. 1 University of Indianapolis and No. 2 Maryville University kick off at 12 p.m. CT from Hunter Stadium on the campus of Lindenwood University.
 
The Greyhounds and Saints played to a 1-1 draw on April 9, with the last win coming for the Super Region 3 Championship on December 8, 2019, when UIndy snuck by Maryville, 1-nil, in Louisville, Ky. UIndy looks for its third GLVC title, and first since 2017, while Maryville will attempt to add its second trophy in three seasons when the two square off on Sunday.

Cedric Sengl scored in the 86’ to lift the second-seeded Saints (11-4-1) to victory on Friday afternoon. It was a battle all day, as Quincy University’s (10-5-1) Cole Hayes began the scoring in 22’ to give the Hawks an early advantage. Maryville answered with two of its own, as Braden Johnson (42’) netted the equalizer just before halftime. After Victor DeGiorgio put the Saints ahead in the 51’, Quincy’s Jack Rhead knotted the match at two apiece after a scrum in the box led to a goal. Three different Saints recorded assists in the win, with DeGiorgio adding a helper to his goal.

After a scoreless opening half, No. 5 UIndy (13-0-3) pounced in the 61’ as Mathias Skjeseth headed a corner from Jakub Olczyk to give the Greyhounds the lead for the good against Lewis University (9-6-1). Just more than three minutes later, Makel Rasheed added a score to UIndy’s lead, with Olczyk and Skjeseth tallying assists. Dimitrios Karousos made three saves between the pipes for the clean sheet.
