Pitching held solid for the first three innings in Friday’s opening contest, before the Green Division’s second-seeded Quincy Hawks hung four runs on the scoreboard in the fourth that was capped by a homer from Justin Eads. Brock Boynton and Dayson Croes added three more tallies for the Hawks in the eighth with run-scoring singles to build the eventual-final-score to 8-0.
Despite the Hawks’ eight runs, the highlight of the morning was starting pitcher Spencer Walker. The junior tossed seven scoreless frames on the bump, finishing with five strikeouts and two hits allowed. Brandon Repking and Jay Hammel closed the door in the final two innings for Quincy.
Four Hawks recorded two hits, while Eric Tipton joined Croes and Eads with a pair of RBI apiece.

Lewis wasted no time on Friday, plating four runs in the second before scoring seven more in the third to lead 11-0. LWU,
USI
Whereas Southern Indiana had its chances, Lindenwood took advantage of its opponent’s miscues in the field to eventually build a 10-0 advantage after the seventh inning. The Lions scored six runs in that seventh frame in which the Screaming Eagles committed three of their six errors. Four of the runs scored were unearned, as Lindenwood continued to put balls in play to make the USI defense work.
Only four RBIs were credited for the Lions, with Kolby Schulte adding one to his 3-for-5 effort at the dish. All 10 of Lindenwood’s hits were singles; however, the Lions stole eight bases in the win, including four in the sixth inning.
Tyler Cassmeyer earned the win on the mound, going 5.1 with four strikeouts.

UIS, UINDY
In what proved to be the most exciting game on day two, it was pitching that made the difference against two of the league’s hottest offenses. Brandon Bannon stole home in the bottom of the first to give the Prairie Stars an early lead, but a sacrifice fly from UIndy’s Isaac Bair to score Caleb Vaughn quickly knotted the game at one apiece in the second. After six straight zeroes on the scoreboard, Zion Pettigrew put UIS back in the lead for good with a single up the middle. Bobby Barnard added a two-run knock moments later, making it 4-1 in favor of the Prairie Stars.
The Greyhounds’ biggest threat came in the sixth with runners on second and third, but UIS southpaw Blake Begner shut down the chance with a pair of strikeouts and throwing a potential run down at the plate in an attempt of a safety squeeze play by UIndy. Begner struck out five in his six frames before Cameron Zunkel earned the three-inning save with five Ks.
Brandon DeWitt tallied two hits for the Greyhounds in the loss, while starting pitcher Corey Bates struck out 11 in a complete-game effort.
