UMSL’s Sylven Claims GLVC Men’s Golf Championship Medalist Honors

 

INDIANAPOLIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis senior Joel Sylven capped a stellar career at the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men's Golf Championship with a wire-to-wire, one-stroke victory at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Sylven fired a 54-hole total of 6-under-par 210, carding rounds of 70-67-73 and never trailing throughout. His total was one stroke shy of tying the GLVC Championship record of 209.

The top-five finishers – which included ties – were named to the first half of the All-Conference squad. Joining the medalist from Falkenberg, Sweden, was University of Indianapolis senior Oliver Mast (71-72-68), who finished runner-up after improving from a tie for fourth after the first day thanks to a third-round low score of 68 to finish just shy of a playoff with a 5-under 211. The 2021 GLVC Champion, Carl Miltun of Missouri S&T (69-72-72–213), placed third ahead of two players in a tie for fourth. Both University of Southern Indiana’s Jason Bannister (69-75-71–215) and UMSL’s Reilly Ahearn (74-72-69–215) propelled themselves from eighth and a tie for 10th, respectively, to place in a tie for fourth and complete the All-GLVC finishers.

The remaining five positions on the All-Conference team, along with Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year awards, as well as the individual and team winner of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, will be announced following a coaches' vote prior to NCAA Regional competition.

On the team side, UMSL (286-285-287–858) beat UIndy (293-294-285–872) by 14 strokes to earn the top seed in Sunday’s medal/match play competition. The Greyhounds will meet No. 3 seed Southern Indiana (290-303-287–880), which will be competing in its first-ever semifinals, while the Tritons will battle No. 4 seed McKendree University (290-292-301–883).

Missouri S&T (288-299-305–892) finished nine shots back of McKendree in fifth place, while Lindenwood University placed sixth with rounds of 305-305-288–898. Maryville University (296-305-299–900) was two back of Lindenwood in seventh, and Rockhurst University (299-298-312–909) was nine behind the Saints in eighth. Drury University (312-315-293–920) and Lewis University (313-314-301–928) rounded out the top-10 teams in ninth and 10th, respectively. Placing 11th was William Jewell College (306-317-308–931), in 12th was the University of Illinois Springfield (316-311-307–934), and completing the 13-team field was Quincy University (325-311-313–949) in 13th.

The start time for Sunday’s semifinal rounds of medal/match play are yet to be determined, pending a potential frost delay. When the teams tee off, it will be UMSL/McKendree will go off No. 1 tee and UIndy/USI off No. 10.

The GLVC Men’s Golf Championship will continue to be streamed live and free on all GLVC Sports Network platforms, including GLVCSN.com, iOS/Android mobile apps, and Roku, Apple TV, Amazon fireTV and Android TV OTT apps. Coverage time is also to be determined, based on first tee times. At the conclusion of the semifinals, pairings will be made for the winning teams before the final round begins, which will then be followed by the team champion trophy presentation.
