GLVC Women’s Lacrosse Postseason Honors Awarded to Maryville, Lewis, UIndy



INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville University senior attacker Sydney Tiemann, junior midfielder Ronnie Skorcz, and freshman attacker Helen Bae, as well as Lewis University junior midfielder Meltonique Brown, University of Indianapolis senior goalkeeper Audrey Moran, and Saints head coach Melissa Gyllenborg have earned major postseason honors for the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Lacrosse season, the league office announced on Friday.
 
Tiemann was named Attacker of the Year, Skorcz earned Defender of the Year, Bae was selected as Freshman of the Year, Brown garnered Midfielder of the Year, Moran was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Year, and Gyllenborg was dubbed Coach of the Year by her peers. In total, 47 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, while seven were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport and Rockhurst University and Quincy University tied as the team sportsmanship award winner. 

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.

Attacker of the Year: Sydney Tiemann, Sr., Maryville
  • Claims first-ever Attacker of the Year award for Maryville.
  • Led league in GLVC-only games for goals (38, 6.3/game), points (41, 6.8/game), and draw controls (45, 7.5/game).
  • Led league in total goals (106, 6.2/game), points (119, 7.0/game), shots (195, 11.5/game), and draw controls (120, 7.1/game).
  • Topped NCAA Division II in goals, points, and shots on goal.
  • Scored most goals in D-II history.
  • Posted the most goals in a single game in D-II this season with 11 against Missouri Western on Apr. 14.
  • Started all 17 games for Maryville.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 27, Mar. 13, Mar. 20, Apr. 3, and Apr. 17.
  • Garnered IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 14 and Apr. 18.
  • Earns second consecutive selection to All-GLVC First Team, also earning a nod as a second-team draw specialist.
 
Midfielder of the Year: Meltonique Bowen, Jr., Lewis
  • Wins first-ever Midfielder of the Year honor for Lewis.
  • Recorded 16 goals (2.7/game), 10 assists (1.7/game), 12 ground balls (2.0/game), six caused turnovers (1.0/game), and 29 draw controls (4.8/game) in GLVC contests.
  • Tallied 34 goals (2.6/game), 12 assists (0.9/game), 24 ground balls (1.9/game), 11 caused turnovers (0.9/game), and 61 draw controls (4.7/game) overall.
  • Started all 13 games for the Flyers.
  • Earns first selection to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Defender of the Year: Ronnie Skorcz, Jr., Maryville
  • Secures first-ever Defender of the Year award for the Saints.
  • Posted 21 draw controls (3.5/game), eight ground balls (1.3/game), and seven caused turnovers (1.2/game) in Conference games.
  • Ranks second in the league for caused turnovers (31, 1.8/game).
  • Added 48 draw controls (2.8/game) and scooped up 32 grounds balls (1.9/game).
  • Started all 17 games for Maryville.
  • Named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 20.
  • Earns first selection to All-GLVC First Team.
 
Goalkeeper of the Year: Audrey Moran, Sr., Indianapolis
  • Garners first career Goalkeeper of the Year award and is the third consecutive honoree for the Greyhounds.
  • Paced league in goals-against average in both Conference play (5.8/game, 32) and overall season (6.9/game, 110).
  • Made 24 saves (4.0/game) and picked up 16 ground balls (2.7/game) in league contests.
  • Stopped 88 shots (5.2/game) overall, adding 39 ground balls (2.3/game).
  • Started all 17 games for UIndy.
  • Named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 27, Mar. 13, and Apr. 17.
  • Earns first selection to All-GLVC First Team.

Freshman of the Year: Helen Bae, Attacker, Maryville
  • Takes home first-ever Freshman of the Year award for Maryville.
  • Ranks second in Conference play for goals (23, 3.8/game).
  • Added 25 points (4.2/game), 12 ground balls (2.0/game), three caused turnovers (0.5/game), and 25 draw controls (4.2/game) in GLVC contests.
  • Posted 56 goals (3.3/game), 65 points (3.8/game), 25 ground balls (1.5/game), 12 caused turnovers (0.7/game), and 46 draw controls (2.7/game) overall.
  • Tied for second in D-II for goals in a single game this season with 10 against Rockhurst on Apr. 21.
  • Played in all 17 games for Maryville, starting 15.
  • Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Apr. 24.
  • Garnered IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week on Apr. 25.
  • Earns spot on All-GLVC Second Team.

Coach of the Year: Melissa Gyllenborg, Maryville
  • Secures first-ever Coach of the Year honor for Maryville.
  • In her first year with the Saints, she managed the team to their winningest season in program history, going 16-1 overall and 5-1 in Conference play.
  • Led Maryville to program’s first national ranking in the IWLCA Poll, ending regular season at No. 11.
  • In addition to guiding Tiemann, Skorcz, and Bae to their major awards and All-GLVC selections, she mentored seniors Jessie Hynes and Skyler Jolie to Second Team distinctions, as well as four others who were named to the Honorable Mention team.
     
UIndy led all league programs with five first-team choices, while three others were named All-GLVC Second Team, and two earned Honorable Mention. Rockhurst University garnered three first-team nods and Maryville saw two players land on the list. The last three spots on the First Team were filled by a single representative from Lewis, McKendree University, and Quincy University.
 
The league also recognized Rockhurst and Quincy as its GLVC Women’s Lacrosse James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipients, as well as seven student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
