Four GLVC Men’s Soccer Programs Secure Major Awards



INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville University senior midfielder Mason Crew, Rockhurst University freshman forward Blake Barrick, and Lewis University head coach Evan Fiffles, as well as McKendree University graduate student defender Matteo Schubert and sophomore goalkeeper Christian Herluf have earned major postseason honors for the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Soccer season, the league office announced on Tuesday.
 
Crew was named Offensive Player of the Year, Schubert earned Defensive Player of the Year, Herluf claimed Goalkeeper of the Year, Barrick garnered Freshman of the Year, and Fiffles was dubbed Coach of the Year by his peers. In total, 33 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, while 15 were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport and Missouri S&T was selected as the team sportsmanship award winner.

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.
 
Offensive Player of the Year: Mason Crew, Senior, Midfielder, Maryville
  • Becomes Maryville’s first-ever Offensive Player of the Year
    • Fifth overall major award winner with the most recent being in 2022 when David Korn won Co-Coach of the Year
  • Appeared in all 19 games, starting 18 and recording 1,221 minutes
  • Tied for first in the league in points (18)
    • Finished second in game-winning goals (4), third in shots (42), fourth in assists (6), and sixth in goals (6) and shots on goal (19)
  • Placed second in GLVC-only matches in game-winning goals (3), third in points (15), fourth in assists (5), fifth in shots (32), seventh in goals (5), and eighth in shots on goal (8)
  • Also named to All-GLVC First Team
 
Defensive Player of the Year: Matteo Schubert, Graduate Student, Defender, McKendree
  • Becomes McKendree’s first-ever Defensive Player of the Year
    • Third overall major award winner with the first two coming in 2019
  • Started all 18 games on the backline, playing in all 1,620 minutes
  • Helped the Bearcats hold opponents to seven goals while recording 12 shutouts – both are best in the league
  • Added eight points on two goals and four assists
  • Also named to All-GLVC Third Team
 
Goalkeeper of the Year: Christian Herluf, Sophomore, McKendree
  • Becomes McKendree’s first-ever GLVC Goalkeeper of the Year
    • Fourth overall major award winner with the first two coming in 2019 and Schubert winning the third
  • Started all 18 games and only missed six minutes (1,614 total)
  • Led league in goals against average (.391), save percentage (.841), and shutouts (12)
    • Stopped 37 shots
  • Paced league in GLVC-only matches with .359 goals against average, .853 save percentage, and nine shutouts
    • Contributed 32 saves and allowed just five goals
  • Named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7
  • Also named to All-GLVC Second Team

Freshman of the Year: Blake Barrick, Forward, Rockhurst
  • Becomes Rockhurst’s fourth Freshman of the Year, with Sam McIntosh winning last in 2023.
    • 17th overall major award winner with the most recent being in 2017 when three Hawks won postseason honors.
  • Appeared in 16 games and started 14, registering 1,135 minutes
  • Finished third in league in shots/game (2.50) and shots on goal/game (1.31), while also tying for third in points/game (1.00)
    • Tied for fourth in goals (6)
  • Tied for first in GLVC-only matches with 16 points and tied for second with six goals
    • Placed third in shots on goal/game (1.31) and shots/game (2.46), along with finishing ninth in assists/game (.308)
  • Also named to All-GLVC First Team
 
Coach of the Year: Evan Fiffles, Lewis
  • Earns his sixth Coach of the Year award and first since 2000
    • 10th Coach of the Year accolade for the Flyers, according to available league records
  • Led the Flyers to 10-2-7 overall record and 9-1-4 GLVC record, as well as the top seed in GLVC Championship Tournament.
  • Mentored six players to All-GLVC recognition, including First Team honorees Sebastian Doppelhofer, Arturs Gorodnickis, Cristian Perez, and Nicholas Rogalski
 
In addition to Maryville’s Crew, Rockhurst’s Barrick, and the Flyers’ quartet – Doppelhofer, Gorodnickis, Perz, and Rogalski – five others earned All-GLVC First Team honors. Maryville’s Bryce Glisson and Rockhurst’s Jacopo Belardo joined their teammates on the First Team, while McKendree University’s Philipp Muehlhans and Philipp Schmidt and Drury University’s Carson Morgan rounded out the list.
 
The 15 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees are listed below, which are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
