Five Programs Garner GLVC Women’s Lacrosse Major Accolades

INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville University fifth-year attacker Sydney Tiemann, Lewis University junior midfielder Meltonique Bowen, Missouri Western State University junior defender Mikaela Ness, Quincy University graduate goalkeeper Kelly McClure, University of Indianapolis freshman defender Amanda Hurry, and Saints’ head coach Melissa Gyllenborg have earned major postseason honors for the 2024 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Lacrosse season, the league office announced on Friday.
 
Tiemann was named Attacker of the Year, Bowen earned Midfielder of the Year, Ness garnered Defender of the Year, McClure was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Year, Hurry collected Freshman of the Year, and Gyllenborg was dubbed Coach of the Year by her peers. In total, 40 student-athletes claimed All-Conference honors, while seven were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship honorees for the sport and Rockhurst University and Quincy University tied as the team sportsmanship award winner.

Attacker of the Year: Sydney Tiemann, Fifth Year, Maryville

• Unanimously claims Attacker of the Year award, winning the honor for the second-straight year.
• Led league in GLVC-only games for goals (43, 6.1/game), points (53, 7.6/game), and shots (80, 11.4/game), while finishing second in draw controls (54, 7.7/game).
• Led league overall in goals (92, 5.8/game), points (119, 7.4/game), shots (175, 10.9/game), and draw controls per game (7.1).
• Placed second in NCAA Division II in goals, points, and shots per game.
• Tallied league-high and program-record 13 points against Lewis on Apr. 19.
• Started all 16 games for Maryville.
• Named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 19, Feb. 26, Mar. 4, Mar. 18, Apr. 1, and Apr. 22.
• Garnered IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 5 and Apr. 23.
• Earns third consecutive selection to All-GLVC First Team, also earning a nod as a first-team draw specialist.

Midfielder of the Year: Meltonique Bowen, Junior, Lewis

• Wins second-straight Midfielder of the Year honor.
• Led league in GLVC-only games for draw controls (57, 8.1/game), while finishing seventh in points (30, 4.3/game) and shots (49, 7.0/game).
• Led league overall with 119 draw controls (7.0/game), as well as placing fifth in points (82, 4.8/game), sixth in shots (110, 6.5/game) and goals (56, 3.3/game), and ninth in assists (26, 1.5/game).
• Ranks seventh in D-II in total draw controls.
• Started all 17 games for the Flyers.
• Earns second consecutive selection to All-GLVC First Team.

 
Defender of the Year: Mikaela Ness, Junior, Missouri Western State

• Secures first-ever GLVC major award for the Griffons.
• Led league in GLVC-only contests for caused turnovers (18, 2.6/game) and placed fourth in ground balls (18, 2.6/game) and draw controls (47, 6.7/game).
• Ranked first overall in the Conference in caused turnovers (37, 2.3/game), third in draw controls (100, 6.3/game), and seventh in ground balls (41/2.6 game).
• Started all 16 games for MWSU.
• Earns second All-GLVC selection and first to the First Team.

Goalkeeper of the Year: Kelly McClure, Graduate, Quincy

• Garners first Goalkeeper of the Year award for the Hawks and second major award winner in the sport after Kathelene Kim won Coach of the Year in 2022.
• Finished second in GLVC-only games for save percentage (.486), third in saves per game (10.3, 72 total), and fourth in goals against average (12.2) amongst goalies with at least 100 minutes played.
  • Also placed third in ground balls with 19 (2.7/game).
• Ranked third overall in the Conference in save percentage (.470) and saves per game (9.7), along with landing fourth in total ground balls (47, 2.6/game).
• Appeared in all 18 games for Quincy, starting 17.
• Named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week on Mar. 25 and Apr. 1.
• Earns fourth All-GLVC selection and first to the First Team.

Freshman of the Year: Amanda Hurry, Defender, Indianapolis

• Takes home third Freshman of the Year honor and 12th overall major award in the sport for the Greyhounds.
• Recorded seven ground balls (1.0/game), seven caused turnovers (1.0/game), three draw controls in GLVC contests.
• Ranked ninth overall in the league in total caused turnovers with 21 (1.2/game).
  • Added 23 ground balls, five draw controls, and one goal.
• Started all 17 games for UIndy.
• Lone freshman to land on All-GLVC First Team.

Coach of the Year: Melissa Gyllenborg, Maryville

• Secures second-straight Coach of the Year honor.
• In her second year with the Saints, she managed the team to its first undefeated season in program history, going 16-0 overall and 7-0 in Conference play, securing the team’s first-ever GLVC Regular Season title and top seed in the league’s postseason tournament.
• Led Maryville to a No. 6 ranking in IWLCA Poll.
• Her Maryville squad led D-II in goals per game (19.7) and scoring margin (+13.6), while placing second in scoring defense (6.1).
• In addition to guiding Tiemann to her unanimous honors with the major award and All-GLVC selection, she mentored senior Ronnie Skorcz and sophomore Haley Ritchie to first-team distinctions, as well as senior Chloe Elliot and sophomore Helen Bae to the Second Team, along with the Honorable Mention freshman Gianna Guzek.

 
Maryville led all league programs with five first-team choices, while two others were named All-GLVC Second Team, and one earned Honorable Mention. UIndy and Missouri Western garnered three first-team nods, while the Greyhounds saw six players land on the Second Team. The last three spots on the First Team were filled by a single representative from Lewis and two from Quincy.

The league also recognized Lewis as its GLVC Women’s Lacrosse James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipient, as well as eight student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
