GLVC Releases 2023-24 Team Academic All-Conference Honorees

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced 182 men’s and women’s teams as recipients of the 2023-24 Team Academic All-GLVC award on Monday. The GLVC recognizes each team from full-time and associate member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year.

The total of 182 honorees from 14 full-time and three associate member schools did not reach the 2019-20 record-breaking total of 207 from 15 schools but did surpass last year’s mark of 161 from 13 schools.

The University of Illinois Springfield women’s tennis program registered the Conference’s highest team GPA with a 3.92 during the 2023-24 academic year. Second overall was the Maryville University men’s tennis team at 3.88. They were followed by Truman State University women’s cross country (3.84) and the Saints’ women’s tennis (3.83) and men’s golf (3.82) teams to round out the top five.

The GLVC had 11 league members with 10 or more teams at or above a 3.30 for the fourth-straight season, which was just shy of the Conference-record 13 set in 2019-20. Lewis University, Rockhurst University, and William Jewell College had the highest number of sports meeting the distinguished 3.30 standard this year with 17.

Eleven GLVC members either maintained or increased their totals from a year ago, and, of the 182 honored programs, 120 came from women’s sports with 62 from the men’s side.

Three league sports – women’s soccer (14), softball (14), and women’s swimming & diving (10) – saw every team above the 3.30 mark. Among the other notables, women’s cross country (13), women’s golf (12), women’s lacrosse (7), women’s tennis (11), women’s track & field (13), and volleyball (13) had all but one program meet the threshold; while women’s bowling (4) had all but two snag the honor.

Of the 120 women’s sports – which include indoor and outdoor track & field as one – nine had more than 80 percent of its participating schools achieve the GPA milestone, including soccer (14/14, 100%), softball (14/14, 100%), swimming & diving (10/10, 100%), cross country (13/14, 92.9%), track & field (13/14, 92.9%), volleyball (13/14, 92.9%), golf (11/12, 91.7%), and tennis (11/12, 91.7%). Two other sports – basketball (11/14, 78.6%) and lacrosse (7/8, 87.5%) – were above 75 percent, and women’s bowling was above 65 percent (4/6, 66.6%).

On the men’s side, golf had the highest percentage of teams earn the honor with nine of the 12 (75%). Nine of the 14 soccer teams (64.3%), seven of the 11 swimming & diving teams (63.6%), and eight of the 13 cross country teams (61.5%) were above the 60-percent threshold, while tennis (6/11, 54.5%), track & field (7/13, 53.8%), and baseball (7/14, 50%) were at 50 percent or better. Rounding out the 62 programs was lacrosse (3/7, 42.9%), basketball (4/14, 28%), and wrestling (1/7, 14.3%).

In five of the previous six seasons, including this year, women’s tennis was the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list. Volleyball and women’s cross country followed with three, women’s basketball was atop two schools’ lists, and men’s tennis was the top sport for one school to round out the top teams.
