Lewis Wins 18th GLVC Men’s Cross Country Championship

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University repeated as the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men's Cross Country Champions on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Lewis Cross Country Course in Romeoville, Illinois.

Capturing their 18th title overall, the 18th-ranked Lewis Flyers retained their title as this year’s champion with 41 points. Lewis had three runners finish in the top 10 and six in the top 15.

Illinois Springfield, Missouri S&T, and Indianapolis battled for runner-up, with only seven points separating second through fourth, with the Prairie Stars coming out on top with 79 points, the Miners coming in third with 83 and the Greyhounds placing fourth earning 86 points.

Drury was in fifth with 100 points, with SBU finishing in sixth with 178 points.

Seventh-place Rockhurst finished with 200 points, ahead of eighth-place Missouri-St. Louis (216), ninth-place Maryville (227), tenth-place Truman State (275). McKendree University (328) was 11th, and Quincy University (379) was 12th.
 
Lewis junior Evan Horgan, set the course record, crossing the tape with a time of 23:26.27. The 2024 GLVC Runner of the Year’s victory marks the 12th time a Flyer has claimed GLVC Runner of the Year and is the sixth different Flyer to be awarded the accolade. Horgan is the 12th multi-time champion and is the fifth multi-time champ for the Flyers.
 
The margin of victory between Horgan and Drury’s Tyler Harris in second place was 25 seconds. Harris came across the line with a time of 23:51.13, just two seconds ahead of third place, Felix Rivet of Indianapolis. Missouri S&T’s Henry Born placed fourth with a time of 23:54.29, and Lewis’s Zack Dunn rounded out the top five with a time of 24:17.40
 
Rounding out the All-GLVC honors were Lewis’ Jack Roberts ninth, Gabriel Cates 12th, Owen Thomas 14th, and Brendon Shea 15th. UIS’ Brock Loftus eighth, Colin Graham 13th, Joey Karlesky 16th, and Matt Padilla 19th. Missouri S&T’s Andrew Bacon sixth, Maddox Riley 18th, and Shaun Wolfe 20th. Indianapolis’ Conyer Wilson 10th, Josue Le Cadre 17th. Drury’s Ethan Haynes 11th, and UMSL Will Kaempfle seventh.

At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, Horgan was honored as GLVC Runner of the Year, Missouri S&T’s Maddox Riley was named the league's top newcomer as Freshman of the Year, and Lewis’s head coach James Kearney was honored by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year for the fourth time. Riley is the first Miner to win the award.

After the race, 12 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were named as their sport's GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honoree. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
