INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference has announced the selection of Drury University's Amanda Newton and Quincy University's Nick Frederickson as the 2006 Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award recipients. The awards will be presented to Newton and Frederickson at the GLVC Spring Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri.
Newton was a four-year member of the Lady Panthers' women's basketball team. She helped her team compile a 122-12 record during her stay, including an appearance in the 2004 NCAA II Championship game. She is a three-time All-American selection and was named to the Kodak All-America First Team and to the Women's D-II Bulletin First Team in 2005 and 2006. Newton finished her playing career as Drury's all-time leader in both points (1,815) and rebounds (793).
Scholastically, Newton was a Second Team CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American selection as a senior and a First Team selection as a junior. She will earn a Bachelor's of Science in Math and Secondary Education in May and has a 3.941 GPA. She was also selected as the Heartland Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2003-04.
Frederickson, a member of the Quincy men's soccer team, helped the Hawks to a 41-26-12 record during his four-year tenure. He was selected to the All-GLVC Second Team in 2004 and 2005 and was an All-NSCAA Great Lakes Region First Team selection in 2005. The team captain was voted the Quincy Rookie of the Year in 2002 and was voted the team's best offensive player in 2002 and best defensive player in 2004.
A four-year member of the Quincy Dean's List, Frederickson will graduate in May with a Bachelor's of Science in Biological Sicences and Chemistry. He boasts a 3.94 GPA and was three-time member of the GLVC All-Academic Team. Frederickson was the recipient of the NCAA's Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship Award and a member of Quincy's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.
The conference annually selects one male and one female student-athlete to be awarded the Paragon Awards. The award is based upon academic excellence, athletic ability and achievement, character, and leadership.
