2006-07 Great Lakes Valley Conference Winter/Spring Scholar-Athletes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has selected ten student-athletes as Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports for the 2006-07 season. Lewis University’s Mary Moskal, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Mike Hardiek and Blake Marcum, Northern Kentucky University’s David Shearer, the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Erin Konkol, Rockhurst University’s Garrett Fischer, the University of Indianapolis’ Lindsey Fischer, the University of Southern Indiana’s Darin Mastroianni and Allison Shafer and the University of Missouri-Rolla’s Kandi Wieberg have been honored for their athletic and academic achievements this past academic year.

The league selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC

Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and

individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Each

conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award.

Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American

standards (3.2), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is

done by each institution's Faculty Athletic Representative.

 

Men's Basketball: Mike Hardiek, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Mike Hardiek, a native of Teutopolis, Illinois, is a Computer Science major at SIU Edwardsville. The senior helped the Cougars to a 15-12 record in 2006-07 while averaging a team-leading 16.7 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. In addition, Hardiek led the team in three-point field goal percentage (44.3%) and free throw percentage (83.5%) and was named All-GLVC Honorable Mention. He was ranked 11th in the GLVC in scoring during the year and 17th in rebounding. Hardiek carries a 3.484 cumulative grade point average, was named Academic All-GLVC and was selected to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Third Team.

 

 

Women’s Basketball: Mary Moskal, Lewis University
Mary Moskal, of Cherry Valley, Illinois, helped Lewis to a 25-9 overall record in 2006-07 and to the school’s first league title in 22 years. She majored in Biology and minored in Biochemistry and Chemistry while at the institution and boasted a 3.960 cumulative GPA. Moskal, an All-GLVC, All-Great Lakes Region, and honorable mention All-America selection, averaged 17.1 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Flyers. The team completed the GLVC schedule with a 17-2 record and Moskal was named Most Outstanding Player of the GLVC Tournament. Lewis was the top seed for the Great Lakes Regional and set a school record for wins. Moskal was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and earned Academic All-GLVC honors. This is the third consecutive GLVC Scholar-Athlete of Year Award for Moskal and she has also been named the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award recipient, the GLVC NCAA Woman of the Year candidate and earned an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

 

 

 

Men’s Golf: David Shearer, Northern Kentucky University
David Shearer, a graduating senior from Charleviox, Michigan, is a Sports Business major and Business Administration minor at Northern Kentucky. He posted a cumulative GPA of 3.238 and is a three-time GLVC Player of the Year. Shearer claimed his third consecutive individual medalist honor at this past spring’s GLVC Championship, leading the Norse to the school’s second consecutive team title. He shot a three-over-par 219 at the GLVC Championship held at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana. Shearer posted a 72.44 scoring average during the year and tied for 28th at the NCAA Super Regional. He was named to the PING NCAA DII All-American Third Team and is a National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar. In addition, Shearer was named Academic All-GLVC and is member of the NKU Dean’s List.

 

 

Women’s Golf: Erin Konkol, University of Missouri-St. Louis
Erin Konkol, a native of St. Louis, is a Business major at Missouri-St. Louis and has posted a cumulative GPA of 3.92. The junior maintained a stroke average of 81.7 during the season for the Riverwomen and became the school’s first women’s golfer to earn All-GLVC honors. Konkol tied for second at the GLVC Championship held at Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh, Indiana this past spring. She finished with a four-over-par 148 after firing an event-low 69 in the final round. Konkol played in 12 tournaments on the year and had nine top-ten finishes and six top-five finishes. She has also been named an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection and Academic All-GLVC.

 

 

Men’s Tennis: Garrett Fischer, Rockhurst University
Garrett Fischer, of Collinsville, Illinois, helped Rockhurst to a 10-9 record in 2007 and to a berth in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The sophomore is a Finance major and is carrying a cumulative GPA of 4.0. He is an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team selection, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-GLVC honoree. Fischer who played No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Hawks helped his team to a runner-up finish at the GLVC Championship Tournament. The Hawks finished 4-1 during the GLVC regular season and placed second in the GLVC West Division. Fischer was 8-10 at No. 2 doubles and 3-11 in singles play during the year.

 

 

Women’s Tennis: Lindsey Fischer, University of Indianapolis
Lindsey Fischer, a native of Georgetown, Indiana, is a Chemistry major at UIndy and has maintained a 3.99 cumulative GPA. She helped the Greyhounds to second-place finish at the GLVC Championship Tournament while playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. UIndy finished with a 12-13 overall record and atop the GLVC East Division with a 5-0 conference mark. The Greyhounds finished ranked No. 38 and earned a berth to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Fischer completed the year with an 18-14 overall singles record and 15-16 overall doubles record. In addition, Fischer was an Academic All-GLVC member and the 2007 Division II ITA Arthur Ashe Award recipient for sportsmanship, leadership, scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. The junior is a repeat winner of the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award having received the honor in 2005-06 as well.

 

 

Men’s Track & Field: Blake Marcum, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Blake Marcum, a native of Centralia, Illinois, helped SIU Edwardsville to GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships and to a 25th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2007. Marcum, the GLVC Champion in the 1,500-meter run, placed 19th in the 1,500-meter at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. He established a new GLVC Record in the 1,500-meter run at the GLVC Outdoor Championships by finishing the event in a time of 3:51.77. He is a Biological Sciences major at SIU Edwardsville and boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.765. Marcum was named Academic All-GLVC, an All-American Scholar and was selected by his teammates as a Cougar Cadre award winner.

 

 

Women’s Track & Field: Allison Shafer, University of Southern Indiana
Allison Shafer, of Plainville, Indiana, is a Nursing and Health Services major at Southern Indiana. The sophomore has posted a cumulative GPA of 3.89 and was recently named Academic All-GLVC and the USI/Integra Bank Female Student Athlete of the Year. Shafer earned All-American honors after finishing fifth at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. She also claimed All-America honors at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships by placing fifth in the 10,000-meter run. Shafer claimed the GLVC Indoor Championship in the 3,000-meter run and the GLVC Outdoor Championship in the 5,000-meter run. She helped the Eagles to a fifth-place team finish at the GLVC Indoor Championships and to a seventh-place finish at the GLVC Outdoor Championships. Shafer set two school records during the season, posting a school-best 9:53.98 in the indoor 3,000-meter run and a 35:51.74 in the indoor 5,000-meter run. She was also named the GLVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the fall.

 

 

Baseball: Darin Mastroianni, University of Southern Indiana
Darin Mastroianni, a native of Huntersville, N.C., led the Eagles to the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, to the North Central Regional title and into the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2001. The Business Administration major carries a cumulative GPA of 3.647 and was selected to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team, to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team and to the Academic All-GLVC team. The junior led the league with a .409 batting average and set school records for steals (64) and hits (97). He ranked first in 15 GLVC offensive and defensive categories. The GLVC Player of the Year was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America First Team and was the ABCA/Rawlings North Central Player of the Year. Mastroianni was a two-time GLVC Player of the Week selection, earned All-GLVC First Team honors and led the nation in steals in 2007.

 

 

Softball: Kandi Wieberg, University of Missouri-Rolla
Kandi Wieberg, of St. Elizabeth, Missouri, was the GLVC Player of the Year after leading the Miners to a 29-18 record and into the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional. She batted .402 with 12 home runs and 39 RBI and broke the Missouri-Rolla single-season record for doubles with 21. Wieberg led the GLVC in slugging percentage (.751), doubles (21) and total bases (127) and was named to the NFCA All-America Second Team and to the Daktronics All-America First Team. The junior Civil Engineering major carries a cumulative GPA of 3.74 and was named Academic All-GLVC. In addition, Wieberg was a member of the UMR Honor Roll and the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. Wieberg is the second Miner to earn a GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and is first Miner softball recipient.
