The GLVC SAAC proudly participates in the Divsiion II national SAAC's initiative to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraising campaign has been identified as a part of the Division II strategic plan and is a major foundation for the development of Division II's national identity. Each GLVC school conducts its own fundraising efforts throughout the year and the conference dollars are then combined to calculate a grand total for the GLVC at the end of each academic year. In previous years, the GLVC SAAC was ranked in the top 10 Conferences in the country to raise the most money for Make-A-Wish.
The NCAA Division II National SAAC began this campaign in 2003, setting a goal to raise $5,000. With all the conferences and schools uniting, they were able to raise $48,000 in the first year. The Make-A Wish Foundation is one of the core values in Division II Athletics, because of our strategy to enhance the strength of community service and the identity of all the member institutuions. Since 2003, the D-II National SAAC has raised over $765,000, one of the largest contributions to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
ABOUT THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 110,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980.
It all started on April 29, 1980, when a 7-year-old boy named Chris Greicius realized his lifelong wish to become a police officer. Many of those responsible for fulfilling Chris’ wish wanted to do the same for other children with life-threatening medical conditions. This led to the formation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Each wish-granting situation is a unique experience for the child, their family, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. However, there is a general process by which a child is referred, qualified, and granted a wish.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation accepts referrals from the child, a parent or legal guardian, or a medical professional treating the child, such as a doctor, nurse, social worker, or child-life specialist. This is to ensure and protect the privacy of the family. Children under the age of 18 with a life-threatening medical condition may be eligible for a wish. The child’s treating physician makes the final determination of whether the child is medically eligible to receive a wish and whether the child is able to participate in the wish.
After the doctor confirms that the child is medically eligible, the Make-A-Wish Foundation assigns a volunteer wish team to coordinate the wish-granting process. When a wish team first visits with a child, the volunteers begin by asking one simple question: “If you could have one wish, what would it be?” Usually, wishes are limited only by a child’s imagination. Most wishes fall into one of four categories: “I wish to go…” “I wish to be… ,” “I wish to meet…,” or “I wish to have...” Once a chapter approves the child’s wish, the wish team sets out to make it come true.
After talking with the child, Make-A-Wish Foundation wish granters set out to create a magical wish experience for the child that will last a lifetime. Every effort is made to include the immediate family in the child's wish. The wish experience often touches dozens and sometimes hundreds of people who either help coordinate or are directly involved in the wish.
