The 2011 Great Lakes Valley Conference Cross Country Championshps will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Evansville, Ind. The University of Southern Indiana will host the event for the third time. The Eagles also hosted in 2000 and 1982.
The 2011 Cross Country Championships will open with the 28th annual women's 6,000-meter run at 10:30 a.m. CT. The 33rd annual men's 8,000-meter run will follow at 11:30 a.m. CT.
The top-placing men's and women's teams will be named the 2011 GLVC Cross Country Champions, respectively. In addition, the top 15 men individual finishers and the top 15 women individual finishers will be named All-GLVC and the medalist of each race will be named the GLVC Runners of the Year. The top finishing freshmen on the men's and women's side, respectively, will garner GLVC Freshman of the Year honors.
Southern Indiana is the defending champion on the men's side having collected their sixth straight conference title and league-best 18th overall at the 2010 event held at the Wayne E. Dennehl National Cross Country Course. Bellarmine (1), Indianapolis (1), Lewis (10) and former GLVC-member Ashland (1) have also claimed men's titles.
Bellarmine enters the 2011 meet having claimed their first GLVC women's cross country title in 2010. Lewis (3), Southern Indiana (6), UW-Parkside (8) and former-member Ashland (9) have each claimed women's crowns.
A new medalist will be named on the men's side for the first time in four years as former Drury runner Jaime Villa Zapatero claimed the previous three individual titles. Zapatero became just the third runner in GLVC history to win the race three times. Former Lewis runner Kathryn Hague was the 2010 medalist on the women's side.
