The SCHEELS Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship will be conducted for the 15th consecutive year in 2012 with the Springfield Prairie Capital Convention Center serving as the site of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final on Mar. 2-4.
The Prairie Captial Convention Center is located in Springfield, Ill. and will provide a neutral site for the 2012 Women's Championship.
The top four teams from the GLVC East and West Divisions, along wih four wild card teams, will qualifty for the 12-team tournament on the basis of the highest percentage of conference games won during the regular season. The top four seeds based on Section 3.C.2.b of the GLVC Handbook will receive first round bye. Seeds 5-8 will host first round games on campus on the weekend of Feb. 25-26. The tournament field will be reseeded following first round competition with the remaining eight teams advancing to Springfield.
There have been seven different teams claim the GLVC Basketball Tournament title including five different titleholders in the past six seasons. Bellarmine (2), Drury (1), Kentucky Wesleyan (5), Lewis (1), Northern Kentucky (2), Saint Joseph's (1) and Southern Indiana (2) have all won tournament crowns. Kentucky Wesleyan has won the most tournament titles with five and last won the event in 2004.
The 2012 SCHEELS GLVC Men's Basketball Championship winner will be named the GLVC Champion and earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament.
Last year, Bellarmine won the school's second straight tournament title springboarding the Knights to a run towards their first-ever NCAA D-II National Championship.
*Prior to the 2004-05 season, the GLVC Champion was determined by the regular season standings, with the automatic qualifer determined by the GLVC Championship.
