Eight Teams Set to Vie for
35th GLVC Men's Soccer Championship
The 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament will take place Nov. 8 and 10 at the highest remaining seed following first-round action on Nov. 3. The top-four seeds will host the tournament openers in the eight-team bracket.
Each of the four quarterfinal winners will advance in the GLVC Championship Tournament, which will be hosted by the highest-seeded semifinalist on Friday, Nov. 8. Two semifinal contests will be played Friday at times to be determined, while the 2013 GLVC Championship Tournament final will take place Sunday, Nov. 10.
Tickets and game times will be announced during the week of the GLVC Championship Tournament once the highest-remaining seed and host is known.
This season marks the 35th year of the GLVC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament, as the conference also celebrates its 35th year of existence. The 2013 event will also be the ninth consecutive year that eight schools will participate in the GLVC Championship.
Southern Indiana has won the GLVC Men's Soccer Championship a record 10 times with the Eagles last title coming in 1991. Lewis has earned eight titles, while former GLVC members Northern Kentucky and SIU Edwardsville captured five and four crowns, respectively. Rockhurst, the defending GLVC Champion, follows with three conference titles, while Drury, Quincy, UW-Parkside and former conference member IPFW have each claimed one league crown.
Last year, the top-seeded Hawks outscored their opponents 6-1 in tournament play, with the only goal being allowed to No. 6 seed Missouri-St. Louis in the GLVC Championship game. Rockhurst captured the title with a 2-1 victory over UMSL, which was making its first appearance in the GLVC Championship final since 1999. The Tritons' trip to the finals also marked the third-straight team outside the top-four seeds to advance to the title game.
The remainder of the 2012 GLVC Championship Tournament field was comprised of No. 2 Quincy, No. 3 Drury, No. 4 Bellarmine, No. 5 Southern Indiana, No. 7 William Jewell, and No. 8 Lewis.
