2016 GLVC Sports Network Extra Credit Testimonials

Twelve students from seven Great Lakes Valley Conference institutions took complete control of the GLVC Sports Network coverage during two games of the 2016 GLVC Basketball Tournament during the GLVCSN Extra Credit initiative.  The following are testimonials from each of the participants.

"The GLVC Extra Credit program was a great experience. I enjoyed working with students from other schools in the GLVC who share my same interest for sports media and communications. I would recommend this program to anyone interested in exploring the field of sports journalism, sports production or sports media."

"The Extra Credit program that is provided by the GLVC Sports Network is an incredibly valuable experience. Learning how to work with people you've just met, dealing with last minute game operation changes, and reporting for colleges other than the one you attend... these are what make the opportunity so rich."

"I thought the GLVCSN Extra Credit project went over really well this year.  I'm glad we had even more participants this year than we did last year.  The fact that students helped produce two of the telecasts again this year was amazing, with some students carrying over to other games to help as well.  We all worked really well with each other and I think this was an opportunity where everyone there took full advantage of it.  It truly was an awesome experience and I am glad the GLVC is academic-focused and partnered with their students to allow them the opportunity for real world experience."

"My experience with the GLVC Extra Credit program has been one for the books. All the students who participated come from schools nowhere near each other yet we still manage to mesh as a cohesive group whenever it came down to work. Speaking of work, the Extra Credit project that I was given helped me to learn how to use my skills with Production Truck and the camera in a larger and unbiased scale. When working for an athletics department, you are favoring one team to win, however once you are working for the conference, all team alliances need to be put aside for professionalism. Working within a large tournament helped me to understand what I will be doing later on in my career as an SID and how to best prepare for that. The GLVC Extra Credit program is one that I will return to for the remainder of my college experience!"

"The GLVCSN Extra Credit program was a great opportunity to gain real world experience and to understand a broadcast of a basketball game from a behind-the-scenes approach.  It was incredible to see the talent of all the Extra Credit participants from across the GLVC, as well as the ability for all of the participants to work together as a cohesive unit with little to no experience working with one another.  The staff of the GLVC welcomed us to their team with open arms and treated us as fellow professionals from the very beginning, which provided a great confidence boost!  I would highly recommend the Extra Credit program to anyone interested in search of a valuable, real world experience in sports media, and I look forward to attending next year!"

"After being able to participate last year as well, I am extremely thankful for the opportunity and I feel I learned so much through that invaluable, hands-on experience. It was great to see the growth from year one to year two and I only see the program increasing in popularity and possibilities. I hope the program continues to grow and that maybe here soon students from all of the universities will be able to attend and participate."

"Thank you for giving me and the other students this opportunity to participate in this Extra Credit event.  I had an amazing time working the conference tournament and look forward to working it for years to come.  I learned so many new things and got a lot of experience over the weekend."

"The Extra Credit program has been a phenomenal opportunity for me to take advantage of. Working with other students from other member institutions is great practice in working with new people and having to adjust and adapt on the fly in a live broadcast situation. The expanded roles and opportunities allowed me to direct the in-house and broadcast cameras, along with replay, which gave me a real experience of what I want to do for a career. I couldn't have gotten this experience without the GLVCSN Extra Credit initiative. I'm sad about graduating and not being able to participate next year!"

"I really enjoyed the Extra Credit initiative. Although I had done graphic design for sporting events, I had never done it in real time as the game happened which added a fun challenge. Collaborating with the other students and staff made the whole experience more fulfilling and effective. It was inspiring to meet other students from other schools doing great work in sports media. I would/will recommend Extra Credit to fellow sports people back at my university!"

"Thank you so much again for the amazing opportunity. I had so much fun and learned a lot. I didn't know too much about everything that had to do with sports media, but after being at the tournament, I learned so much and look forward to developing my media skills more. I would love to hear more about additional student opportunities within the GLVC."

"I really enjoyed my experience in the Extra Credit program. I really am considering being a social media manager or doing something being in charge of all social media for sports, and I think it really helped me see what it is like to work for the social media sites of a large organization. I am glad I was able to get this experience.  Everyone from the GLVC was extremely nice and helpful with everything."
