Truman State Set to Host the
2017 GLVC Cross Country Championships

The 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Kirksville Country Club in Kirksville, Missouri.  Truman State University will serve as host.

For the fourth straight season, the GLVC Cross Country Championships will be streamed tape-delayed on the GLVC Sports Network.  The date and time the event will air is still to be determined.

The 2017 Cross Country Championships will open with the 34th annual women's 6,000-meter run at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 39th annual men's 8,000-meter race at 10:30 a.m. CT.

The top-placing men's and women's teams will be named the 2017 GLVC Champion, respectively. In addition, the top 15 individual men finishers and the top 15 individual women finishers will be named All-GLVC and the medalist of each race will be named the GLVC Runners of the Year. The top-finishing freshman on both sides will garner GLVC Freshman of the Year honors.

The Southern Indiana men's team placed all five scorers in the top 10 and totaled 28 points, netting a margin of victory of 38 points over runner-up Lewis (66).  It was the team's largest winning cushion since the Screaming Eagles (24) topped the Flyers (88) in 2013.  The win gave USI its league-best 24th GLVC crown, while the current streak of 12 straight titles is the longest for any team in any sport in Conference history.

For the first time in the 38-year history of the GLVC Championships, a Bellarmine runner was the first to cross the finish line as junior Chris Striegel posted a 16-second victory with an 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 02.23 seconds.

The Screaming Eagles scored 28 points to defeat runner-up Bellarmine (83) by 55 points, marking the largest margin of victory in conference history.  The previous record was 52 points, set by former GLVC member Ashland (16 points) over USI (68) in 1985.  Additionally, Southern Indiana junior Emily Roberts set the official GLVC Championship-record winning time of 20 minutes, 36.03 seconds over the 6,000-meter course.  Her time bested the previous conference mark of 20:43.56, set by UW-Parkside’s Jessica Monson in 2008.
