Bellarmine Set to Host the
2018 GLVC Cross Country Championships
The 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky, and Bellarmine University will serve as host.
For the fifth-straight season, the GLVC Cross Country Championships will be streamed tape-delayed on the GLVC Sports Network. The date and time the event will air is still to be determined.
The 2018 postseason race will open with the 40th annual men's 8,000-meter run at 10:30 a.m. ET, followed by the 35th annual women's 6,000-meter run at 11:30 a.m.
The top-placing men's and women's teams will be named the 2018 GLVC Champion, respectively. In addition, the top-15 individual men's finishers and the top-15 individual women's finishers will be named All-GLVC, and the medalist of each race will be named the GLVC Runners of the Year. The top-finishing freshman on both sides will garner GLVC Freshman of the Year honors.
Southern Indiana clinched its seventh-straight women's title in record fashion last year at the Kirksville Country Club in Kirksville, Missouri. One year after scoring the largest margin of victory (55 points) over Bellarmine, the Screaming Eagles equaled the narrowest margin of victory this year with a two-point win over the Knights, 36-38. In 2010, it was Bellarmine that scored a two-point win over USI, 52-54, at UW-Parkside. With the victory, USI extended its GLVC record with 12 team championships, including the last seven.
Individually, Drury freshman Claire McCune crossed the line first with a 6,000-meter time and personal best of 21 minutes, 55.42 seconds. In doing so, McCune was named GLVC Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year – both firsts for a Drury runner – while also becoming just the second newcomer to ever win both honors. Former Lewis standout and GLVC Hall of Famer Kasia Arient was the first to do so in 1996.
USI extended its league record with its 13th consecutive men's title last season. The Screaming Eagles totaled 24 points on the day, placing all five scorers in the top 10, just as they accomplished in 2016. The 24 points tied USI’s winning total from 2013 as the sixth-best winning score in GLVC history. The victory gave USI its league-best 25th Conference crown, while the current streak of 13-straight titles is the longest for any team in any sport in Conference history.
One year after Bellarmine’s Chris Striegel became the first GLVC Champion in program history, which snapped five-straight winners from Southern Indiana, sophomore Austin Nolan returned the Screaming Eagles to the top with a winning 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 28.66 seconds. He was the first sophomore to win the Conference crown since former USI standout Johnnie Guy earned his first of three wins in a row in 2013.
